Program details
Our Farm Stay takes place on a stud farm in the beautiful Región del Bío-Bío in southern Chile, about 30 kilometers from the big city of Los Ángeles. The nearest town, Río Claro, is about 4 kilometers from the farm.
Fernando and his wife Sabine, both veterinarians by profession, run the stud farm with great passion. The farm serves as a riding center, horse boarding facility and for breeding and training Arabian horses. In addition to breeding, Fernando and Sabine concentrate on training the horses. They regularly take part in endurance tournaments all over Chile.
Fernando and Sabine also breed the Malinois (Belgian Shepherd Dog). In addition to the approx. 40 horses, there are also more than 10 dogs, cats and chickens among the animals on the horse farm.
They have two sons (born 2009, 2014) who share their parents' great passion for animals and, if possible, help out on the farm. A pleasant family atmosphere awaits you here in the midst of beautiful evergreen nature.
There are also 4 employees on the farm between the ages of 30 and 50 who work as trainers, in animal care and for maintenance.
Tasks
The tasks in this farm stay program are interesting and, above all, diverse. Riders and horse fans will feel at home here.
Working hours will be determined on site with the family and factors such as weather, time of year, current needs and your skills will be taken into account.
Usually, the volunteers work about 5 hours a day, 6 days a week. Experience has shown that arrangements for additional days off during the week are not a problem after an induction period.
Your area of responsibility may include:
- Moving horses
- Horse riding
- Grooming and brushing horses, cleaning hooves
- Taking care of the newly foaled mares and foals
- Feeding the horses
- Feeding the other farm animals
- Assisting with other work that needs to be done on the farm
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Accommodation
The participants in this Farm Stay project live directly on the horse farm. A small guest house (Spanish: cabaña) is available for you with your own room and bathroom. Daily meals are taken with the Farmers family in the main house. Delicious, rural and healthy home cooking!
Internet WIFI is available at the horse farm.
Location
The horse farm is 4 km from Río Claro and about 22 km from Yumbel. It is approximately 12 km to La Laja and 30 km to the larger city of Los Angeles. The landscape is characterized by evergreen vegetation, idyllic country life and a calm rhythm of life.
Yumbel itself is known for its folkloric activities and in general you can tell that here in the country the clocks have stopped a bit and old traditions have been preserved. It is a region of the country where agriculture and forestry are important industry sectors, and where everything from vegetables to fruit grows very well.
Sheep and cattle breeding are also predominant here, as is fishing on the long stretches of coast. The area around Laja invites you to many beautiful excursions into nature, for example to the National Park Laja with a wonderful view of the Antuco volcano.
The nearest major city is Los Angeles with around 200,000 inhabitants. According to the national ranking, it is among the 10 cities with the highest quality of life in Chile.
