Volunteer Work, Aminal Welfare, Child Care, Health
flexible start and end dates, year-round
This program was created by an Italian-Ecuadorian lady who started providing a range of therapies for children with special needs (down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness, autism) in one of the biggest parks in Quito. After years of hard work, she found a space at the park to keep on working.
Over the years, the number of children who come to her have increased greatly. She now has 15 dogs and some horses.
Not only does she care for these animals, but she also provides therapy to many kids with different special needs. Over the years this horse and dog therapy center has grown into a well-known project.
Volunteers are needed to take care of the dogs and horses and to help during the therapy sessions.
This volunteer project in Ecuador would not exist without the help of foreign volunteers. Their help is extremely important in keeping this project alive. The main tasks of a volunteer will be to feed, bathe, and play with the therapy dogs.
You will also help to maintain the infrastructure of the center. Another part of your work will be the training and education of the new (rescued) dogs. The new dogs that used to live on the street have to learn the basic manners and how to walk on a leash. With lots of love, patience, and treats they soon will be able to walk beside a wheelchair.
You don’t have to be an animal expert to participate in this volunteer work project in Ecuador. A genuine love of animals and willingness to help is all you need to make a vital contribution to the well-being and future of dogs in Quito. These abandoned animals truly depend on the commitment of humans like you. Animal experts are always more than welcome to participate in this project and are much needed! If you are a veterinarian or are a vet student, please join this volunteer program!
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
The best way to learn more about Ecuadorian culture and customs while practicing your Spanish skills is to live in a homestay. A top priority of our volunteer programs in Ecuador is full cultural immersion, so volunteers will be accommodated in local homestays in Quito. Our hosts have been carefully selected and most of them have many years of experience hosting foreign volunteers.
Volunteers will have either a private bedroom or share the room with another volunteer. The bathroom may also be private or shared. Full board with 3 meals per day is included, as well as laundry service once a week.
Quito is located in the Andean highlands at around 2850 meters above sea level. Therefore, despite the proximity to the equator, it is moderately warm all year round with an average temperature of approx. 13 °C. During the day, the temperatures reach between 20 and 25 °C. There are rainy seasons from September to November and from January to April, it usually rains around noon and then the sun shines again.
Quito is not only located in a great setting, right under the Pichincha volcano and offers a pleasant climate, but there are also cultural treasures: Built in the 16th century on the ruins of an ancient Inca city, Quito has the best preserved historical center in all of Latin America. For this reason, Quito was the first city in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Quito also offers a lively nightlife, traditional markets, interesting museums and theaters as well as festivals of various kinds at certain times. Outdoor fans will love day trips to the surrounding Andean landscapes!
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Ecuador, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.
