Project details
This is a perfect project for dog lovers who dream of coming to Argentina. You will get involved in animal welfare while rescuing and rehabilitating stray dogs. The local team works hard to provide a temporary safe home for the rescued dogs until animal-loving families may adopt them. Unfortunately, charity work like this is not financially supported by the government in Argentina, so our partner organization relies on helping hands as well as donations. There are 25 dogs (number subject to change) living at the dog shelter.
There, they are cared for, rehabilitated, provided with medical care, vaccinated, and trained. As a result, the families who adopt them get a completely healthy and well-trained dog. The facility covers a total of approximately 2 km² (0.8 mi²) outside of Cordoba in northern Argentina. There is a building to isolate the new dogs from the others, a kind of quarataine. After the first round of medical checks and treatments, they are then held together with the other dogs. The rescue center has its own small medical facility to treat insured or sick animals.
Tasks
No prior knowledge of animal care is required for this type of volunteering, but you should be a patient and responsible person. You should also be fond of animals and of course not be afraid of dogs. Volunteers usually work around 6 hours a day from Monday to Friday and sometimes also on Saturdays.
Your tasks may be:
- Caring for the animals (bathing, grooming, etc.)
- Walking the dogs
- Feeding the dogs
- Cleaning of the compounds and facilities
- Playing with the dogs
- Training and rehabilitating the dogs
- Supporting the adoption processes
- Assisting with medical treatments
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Accommodation
During your volunteer work in the dog shelter in Argentina, you will be accommodated in the volunteer house located on the grounds of the dog shelter. The supervisor of the shelter also lives on site and will be your primer contact person. Dormitories and bathrooms are shared. Food is not included, but you will have access to a fully equipped kitchen for self-catering.
There is limited internet access at the project location.
When you arrive in Argentina, someone from the project will pick you up at the airport in Cordoba. Airport drop-off is also included.
Note: In Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer projects take place, the cellular or internet connection is not always reliable and fast.
Location
The animal shelter is located in the north of central Argentina near the beautiful city of Cordoba, the second largest city in the country. Cordoba has a very different shape than its "big sister" Buenos Aires, much more relaxed, less hectic and not that huge. The inhabitants of Cordoba are known throughout the country as fun-loving people. The city offers an attractive mix of old and new: Ruins of 17th-century Jesuit buildings alternate with modern art galleries and many national and international students ensure a lively nightlife as well as many interesting events and activities.
Cordoba has an annual average temperature of about 20 °C, with the warmer months being October to April. Between December and March, temperatures above 30 °C are reached. Most of the rain falls in the summer. During the southern winter, from June to August, it is very dry in Cordoba.
