throughout the country
flexible start and end dates, year-round
Uruguay is not among the most visited countries in South America, which is actually a pity, because it offers countless beaches, an adventurous countryside, amazing wildlife, and friendly locals. The country is home to many farmers on their haciendas, which are typically horse farms or cattle ranches. Some of them are tourist-orientated and welcome both national and international guests who are looking to spend a couple of nights in the beautiful countryside, surrounded by animals, nature, and fun outdoor activities.
A Farm Stay in Uruguay gives you the unique opportunity to explore the country off the beaten path, get to know the local people in a work setting, and strengthen your Spanish language skills. Another bonus of a Farm Stay is that your stay abroad is paid for in exchange for your work on the farm!
The Farm Stay program allows you live the country life as you learn to care for animals, cultivate and process agricultural products, assist with tourist visits, and carry out daily tasks on a farm.
When you do a Farm Stay program in Uruguay, you can choose between horse farms, farms with other animals (sheep, cows, etc.), tourist-oriented farms, tourist ranches or haciendas, agricultural plantations, etc. The distinct program sites are located in the beautiful countryside of Uruguay, allowing participants to explore the backcountry. Some of the farms are specifically dedicated to tourism and offer horseback rides lasting from a few hours up to several days, as well as hiking, and other outdoor activities. On these farms, there are accommodations for guests in on site guesthouses.
When participating in a Farm Stay program in Uruguay, you should be aware that the farms are typically located in remote areas, far from large cities or towns. Only some are located near tourist destinations, giving participants access to a city’s amenities and activities during their free time. If you are ready to escape the hustle and bustle of your daily routine, an unforgettable experience is waiting for you in the Uruguayan countryside.
The tasks for Farm Stay participants are diverse and vary depending on the type of each farm. Most of the ranches where we place our volunteer farmers focus on tourism and welcome visitors year-round. Our participants have the chance to not only work in agriculture or with farm animals, but also attend to and guide the farm’s guests.
As a volunteer, your time will consist of working with the local gauchos (South American cowboys), caring for horses and other livestock, cleaning or maintaining stables and fields, and working with the visitors. You will also have an opportunity to share all you've learned at the ranch with guests. Participants are asked to assist with guided tours of the ranch and local areas, while also promoting sustainable tourism and environmental awareness.
During your free time, you will have the chance to adventure in the beautiful areas that surround the farm. Whether you looking to explore nearby cities, visit picturesque lakes, or hit the Atlantic coast, there is much to explore!
*Farm Stays with horses are among our most demanded programs. These farms prefer participants who have previous knowledge of working with horses, and who are experienced riders. Although we try hard, we cannot guarantee placements on a horse-related farm without any previous experience working with horses.
During your Farm Stay in Uruguay, you will live and work directly on a farm. This gives you the unique opportunity to get to know Uruguayan traditions and cuisine, as you become immersed in farm and family life. You will be accommodated in a single or shared room, either in the farmer's own house or the house of an employee. Bathrooms are most likely shared.
You'll be provided with full board and share meals with the farmer´s family and other farm workers. Meals offer you the perfect opportunity to interact with the local people, develop your Spanish skills, and learn more about the country's culture and lifestyle.
Our Farm Stay partners are located all over Uruguay. They are mostly set right in the middle of their lands, some of which consist of infinitely wide pampas, beautiful hilly landscapes or in some cases even vineyards. Many of the estancias are beautiful buildings in the Spanish colonial style. The farmers grounds often have beautiful patios, together with the stables and the farm buildings, as well as the workers' homes. This is world of its own, where time seems to pass more slowly. Gauchos are part of this world; they can look back on a long tradition and have developed their own subculture.
In the 17th century, they moved from one estancia to another to offer their services. Later on, they remained on a certain estancia, where they were responsible for the cattle in the vast estates. In addition to life in the saddle, mate tea is inextricably linked to the gaucho culture, since it keeps them warm and hydrated while working outside for hours or days. You don't just drink mate, you celebrate mate - try it!
