Program details
Our Farm Stay in Paraguay takes place near the city of Caacupé in central Paraguay, about an hour's drive from the capital Asunción. Caacupé is the capital of the province of Cordillera and the next largest city to where you can get by bus easily. The farm, also called estancia, where our Farm Stay program takes place, is located in the evergreen Cordillera hills, one of Paraguay's most enchanting landscapes.
The farm owner is a native German. She emigrated to Paraguay in 1996 to realize the dream of a life in nature, with animals and without the hustle and bustle of a big city. She speaks German, English and Spanish.
The farm includes a tourism business: there are cosy guest rooms with a pool available for the guests. Riding excursions and various other activities, such as a visit to the famous Iguazu Waterfalls are part of the tourist program. Country life and pure adventure await you here!
At the estancia in Paraguay, (almost) everything is about horse: The farm is home to 30 horses, mostly typical South American criollos, but also mestizos, Lusitanos and Quarter Horses. These sure-footed and quiet South American horses are also very suitable for beginners after a short instruction for riding trips.
Tasks
There is always a lot to do on a farm. Every day, there are different tasks that have to be completed to make sure the horses are taken care of, to maintain the estancia and to run the hospitality service.
Take this unique opportunity and get to know the life and work on a Paraguayan estancia. You can expect a pleasant working atmosphere, nice people and many opportunities to explore the stunning landscape in your free time or during excursions.
The following examples will give you a little insight into your job during your farm work in Paraguay:
- Caring for the horses
- Feeding the horses
- Moving/training the horses
- Cleaning the stables and saddles
- Preparing horse riding excursions with guests
- Guiding horse riding excursions with guests
- Feeding the other animals of the farm (dogs, cats, etc.)
- Helping in the kitchen
- Customer service
- Other tasks on the farm, on the premises or in the household
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Accommodation
Full immersion into a country and its culture is an important aspect of our Farm Stay programs in South America.
During your farm work in Paraguay you will therefore be accommodated in a guest room directly on the Estancia.
There is running water, electricity and internet around the clock. Your stay includes full board. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared by the host family. Meals are taken alone or with other participants, if several are on site, or sometimes also with the farm owner. Assistance in kitchen work and service is desired.
Note: In Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer projects take place, the cellular or internet connection is not always reliable and fast.
Location
Ytu Guazu belongs to the municipality of Caacupé in central Paraguay, about 60 kilometers from the capital Asuncion. The Ytu Valley was originally populated by the Guaraní indigenous people and their ancient traditions and language are still very alive there. Today the valley is mainly inhabited by crofters and their families. The region gradually opened up to tourism and there are many beautiful fincas that receive guests.
The Cordillera de los Altos is one of the most beautiful areas of Paraguay and delights its visitors with lovely evergreen landscapes and numerous rivers with amazing waterfalls.
The capital of this region and at the same time the most populous city is Caacupé, which is also considered the "spiritual capital" of Paraguay, because here you can visit the basilica of the Virgin of Caacupé. More than 1.5 million believers go there during a pilgrimage each year in December.
Ytu Guazu has a subtropical climate. There are regular short rain showers every few days that provide for the evergreen vegetation. The average annual temperature is approx. 25 °C per day, but the temperatures are often also above 32 °C - so you should rather like hot weather.
