Program details
The horse ranch is located 800 km north of Lima in the area of a huge dry forest of Carob Trees, Zapotes and Vischayos. The owners, a nice multinational family, run the ranch as a tourism project and offers riding excursions, riding holidays and farm holidays.
With their lovely and well tamed horses they provide horseback riding tours through the largest dry forest in the world, the "Sanutario Historico Bosque de Pomac", a National Reserve, where you can see the Pyramids of Tucume, the largest archeological site of Old Peru, the last Moche Temple Huaca Bandera, and the Pyramids of Lord of Sican-Batangrande of Lambayeque Culture.
Horseback riding tourism offers an amazing experience in a natural setting with an abundance of flora and fauna. The farm serves as the launchpad for various horseback tours, offering unique opportunities for sightseeing, birdwatching, and visiting historical sites. In Peru, horseback riding is a great way to appreciate the stunning scenery and rich culture of the country.
If you already know about horses and love riding, this is the place for you. But even if you haven’t any experience with horses it is not too late!
For unexperienced riders, the farm offers assistance so that you can slowly approach the horses, learn how to care for them and even learn to ride a horse. The Peruvian Paso Horses are ideally suited for this, because they are patient, easy-going and have a smooth gait, so that even non-riders can enjoy discovering this interesting corner of Peru on a horseback.
Tasks
The tasks that volunteers will engage in at the ranch are very diverse and take place mainly outdoors. It is of upmost importance to the ranch owners that volunteers feel comfortable with their tasks. However, it is also important that volunteers are driven to physically work hard and show their flexibility and adaptability when assigned different tasks.
Furthermore, a certain amount of initiative, motivation, and sense of responsibility is expected from each volunteer. Volunteer work consists of the caring for and feeding the animals, stable work, field tasks, and general upkeep in the house and around the ranch.
In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to help with the service for guests as well as with the organization and escort of horseback riding excursions. If the volunteers have prior experience working with horses, they will also be allowed to help train them.
When working with the tourists, you help with the planning and leading the horseback riding excursions with the visitors to the Inca and Pre-Inca temples and archaeological sites. Only experienced riders can take on this responsibility.
There's plenty of other work you can do if working with horses isn't your thing. The farm is home to numerous animals in addition to the horses, including cats, dogs that were rescued from the streets, chickens, ducks, and cows. You can also assist with field work or with the upkeep and landscaping of the farm.
It's possible to acquire skills in cutting horse hoofs, milking cows, making homemade cheese, and yogurt.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Accommodation
The volunteers of this Farm Stay project live directly on the ranch, which allows them to be connected to the family life of the ranch owners. The ranch offers a multicultural environment and languages spoken there include, Spanish, German, English, and French. When not working, volunteers will have some time to relax at the property’s beautiful garden with hammocks or in the pool.
Volunteers will have full board during their stay. Many fresh ingredients, such as the milk and eggs, are produced right on the ranch.
Chiclayo is the capital of the Lambeyehue region and is approximately a 1-hour drive away from the farm. This city has 600,000 residents and is the perfect place to explore various shopping and cultural exhibits (museums and art).
The Pacific Ocean and beautiful beaches are also reachable within an hour. The village of Pimentel is also nearby and attracts tourists with its local traditional fisheries.
Note: In Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer projects take place, the cellular or internet connection is not always reliable and fast.
Location
The beautifully situated farm is located in northwest Peru near the village of Pacora, about 40 km from Chiclayo. There are regular bus connections between Pacora and Chiclayo (approx. 1-hour drive).
In addition to many small local farming villages with their cotton, rice and sugar cane plantations, there are various tourist attractions, such as one of the largest dry forests in the world and archaeological sites of the Inca and Pre-Inca times, with ruins, adobe pyramids of the original Sican culture and much more. In Túcume, the largest archaeological site of ancient Peru, you can find 26 pyramid-like buildings.
The icing on the cake is just under an hour and a half away: On the beaches of Chiclayo you can relax and go for a sea breeze and even take surf lessons, but also watch the local fishermen go out fishing in their small cane boats, just like they did over 1000 years ago - an authentic piece of local culture.
Language skills
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Peru, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.

Requirements

- Minimum age 18 years

- Completion of a foreign travel health insurance (get your travel insurance here!)
- Vaccination against tetanus, hepatitis, yellow fever (not mandatory, but recommended); please ask your doctor for advice.
