At this volunteer project in Costa Rica, you can actively help run an Eco-lodge in the rainforest, not far from the beautiful Caribbean coast. In addition to ecotourism, our partners also run a nature conservation program on 850 hectares of land. The area of the lodge borders on the famous La Amistad National Park, which is known for its breathtaking biodiversity.
During this volunteer work project, you will support a sea turtle protection project in the conservation area of Pacuare, near the border to Nicaragua. The project area is situated in the province of Limón and extends over 800 hectares (1,977 acres) of rainforest and 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) of beach.
During this volunteer work project, you will support a Sea Turtle Protection Project in the Camaronal National Wildlife Refuge on the beautiful Nicoya Peninsula. The refuge is situated in the province of Guanacaste, in the north western part of Costa Rica. The area, which became a National Wildlife Refuge in 1994, extends over 243 hectares (600 acres) of land and spans 3 kilometers (2 miles) along the coast.
In many low-income Costa Rican families, both parents need to work full-time in order to provide enough income for their family. Day care centers offer care and education for children, while their parents are at work. These centers reach out to several hundreds of children from surrounding areas. The kids come from various backgrounds, ranging from extreme poverty to middle class homes.
Our partner schools in Costa Rica are usually flexible with work schedules, allowing participants to work full-time or part-time. Although volunteers from abroad are not required to have special skills or a professional background in education, they need to be able to work independently and proactively, demonstrating extensive initiative and creativity.
Many children, especially those who live in unstable environments, and suffer physical and/or psychological abuse, are considered to be at risk. Children’s homes give these children a temporary place to live, while their parents undergo counselling or treatment. If the domestic situation cannot be improved, the children are moved to a permanent children’s home and might be given into adoption.
Although the institutions where we place our volunteers are quite flexible with work schedules, you are encouraged to volunteer all day to build personal relationships with the children. However, half-day volunteer positions alongside a Spanish course are also available. Although volunteers don’t need to have special skills or experience working with kids, it is very important that you are able to work independently and proactively.
On the long and beautiful sandy beaches between Quepos and Dominical on the Pacific coast in Costa Rica not only sea turtles have their nesting sites, the subtropical forests along the beautiful coast are also home to sloths. These cute animals are among the characteristic species of Costa Rica.
The facilities where our volunteers work are non-profit organizations. They often lack professional staff and sufficient financial means to be able to work properly. Volunteers, especially those with previous therapeutic training, are urgently needed to help care for the children and to support the teachers during the lessons.
