Project details
As an Au Pair in Chile you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in Latin American culture and become part of society by living in a family with children. As an Au Pair in Chile you will not only have unforgettable moments, but also develop self-reliance and self-esteem, and you can grow personally and make new friends.
If you want to get work experience abroad in an absolutely stunning and diverse country, Chile is the place to be! And if you love children and you enjoy spending time with them, then an Au Pair program in Chile is just the thing for you!
From your host family you will get accommodation in a single room and all meals, in addition you will receive a monthly pocket money as a small financial cushion for personal expenses and leisure activities.
We will place you as an Au Pair in one of our carfully selected host families in Chile. Not only do we visit the families at their homes (Santiago area only), we also ask them about their expectations and needs to ensure that the Au Pair and host family are the perfect match.
Our host families are spread throughout the country, but most live in the greater Santiago area. As an Au Pair, you will mainly take care of the children and you will also help with chores in the household. Foreign languages play a major role, as most children either attend a bilingual school or are educated bilingually from home. So, it is important that you share your language and culture with your host family.
The program is not only aimed at young people. If you didn't have the opportunity to go abroad when you were young, become a granny au pair now! Our friendly team will be happy to inform you about this option.
Tasks
Families looking for an au pair are not always, but often bilingual, so bilingual childcare is important to most of them. You take the role of the caregiver after school or kindergarten (or in the case of babies all day), until the parents come home from work. On the one hand, this is a great responsibility, but on the other hand it is incredibly fun!
Working Hours are between 30 and 40 hours per week, which can also include babysitting in the evening or at the weekend.
Your responsibilities may include, among others:
- taking/driving the children to nursery or school
- playing, singing, doing handicraft etc. with the children
- helping with homework
- going for walks / to the playground / doing outdoor activities with the children
- going with the children to sports and leisure activities
- supervising the children, dressing and washing them
- helping with keeping the home tidy and clean
- preparing meals for the children
Accommodation
You live in a single room in the house of the host family. An Au Pair stay is a unique opportunity to broaden your cultural and language skills. As an Au Pair you are another member of the family and close to family life. As a family member, it is important to abide by the rules of the respective family and to treat each other respectfully.
Location
Chile is located on the west coast of South America, between the Andes mountain range and the Pacific Ocean. It is the longest country on earth with a north-south extension of about 4,300 km (not counting Antarctica). Imagine that placed across Europe, one end would be north of Moscow and the other near Lisbon!
Due to its sheer length, each region in Chile has its own climate, landscapes, as well as culinary and cultural peculiarities. It is a country full of breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders: There is the bizarre Atacama Desert, wine valleys, beautiful beaches, pristine forests, volcanoes, lakes, pampas and even icebergs.
Most host families, however, live in or around Santiago de Chile. Chile's capital has around 7 million inhabitants and is the political, cultural and economic center of the country. The city combines the characteristics of a modern capital with those of a colonial city. Despite all the hustle and bustle, you will find beautiful places to relax, old colonial buildings and a lively urban culture with museums, theaters and more in this amazing city.
Small craft markets and large vegetable markets, green meadows, countless restaurants and pubs in entertaining nightlife areas invite you to linger and discover. Santiago is home to numerous universities, so you will also find many international students here.
The Santiaguinos, how the inhabitants of Santiago are called, are friendly and helpful people and quite interested in international visitors.
Santiago offers you so many options: Where else can you say: "Are we going to the beach today and skiing in the Andes tomorrow, or the other way round?" Both options are equally easily accessible from Santiago. Really close by, there are also idyllic wine valleys where you can taste excellent Chilean wines.
Language skills
Depending on the profile of the Au Pair host family, good Spanish and/or English skills are expected. Regardless of the host family’s requirements, Spanish skills are always helpful, so that you can get around easily during your free time.
