A protected area with a remarkable mission and vision! The reserve's primary goal is the protection and preservation of the temperate rainforest, including its rivers, lagoons, and diverse ecosystems. From the outset, the founder had a clear mission: to preserve nature while simultaneously empowering the surrounding communities. Because protecting the environment should go hand in hand with improving the quality of life for local people – today and in the future.

The vision of the organization that manages the reserve is to empower the local population to strengthen their economic base through the sustainable use of natural and cultural resources. The beauty and uniqueness of the region must be preserved for a harmonious coexistence between people and nature.

The work focuses on protecting the forest and restoring damaged landscapes. Ecological landscaping and botanical reforestation are actively used to combat the loss of valuable habitats. Particular attention is paid to endangered species such as the rare huemul, the Andean deer, which has found a home in the reserve. Amphibians, birds, insects, and mammals are protected through in-situ conservation projects, monitoring, breeding programs, and reintroduction efforts.

In addition to practical nature conservation, scientific research projects are developed and supported. These provide important insights into the biological processes within the reserve – from biodiversity to its geological history. Similarly, cultural projects contribute to the revival of traditional music and crafts, thus ensuring the sustainable protection of both environmental and cultural heritage.

The protected area provides essential habitat for many wild animals, which has remained largely untouched. The huemul symbolizes these efforts, as it is considered rare and endangered. The reserve promotes the restoration and preservation of natural ecosystems to ensure a livable environment for flora and fauna in the long term.

2. Integration of Local Communities
Before the reserve’s establishment, the region was characterized by high unemployment, triggered by a decline in the timber industry. Today, over 90 percent of the reserve's employees come from the surrounding villages. The foundation supports the local population in rediscovering their cultural roots and developing a strong sense of identity. Specific programs offer vocational training workshops for artisans, educational support, healthcare, as well as festivals and competitions that improve the quality of life. In this way, economic and social change goes hand in hand with environmental protection.

3. Sustainable Tourism
For about 20 years, a tourism project has been opening new perspectives. Visitors can experience the breathtaking landscape of Patagonia, discover its unique flora and fauna, and learn about the importance of environmental protection. A variety of accommodations—from hotels and cabanas to campsites—allow for a stay close to nature. Volunteering at the biological nature reserve in Patagonia is far more than just a travel experience. The work is done in 10-day shifts followed by 3 days off, allowing for a good balance between work and rest.

Important note: Despite the focus of the work, direct contact with wildlife is not guaranteed, as the project aims to disturb the animals as little as possible.

The months from May to August, in particular, bring challenging weather conditions – sub-zero temperatures, snow, rain, and mud are all part of the experience. Nevertheless, all activities take place as planned and offer the opportunity to experience a fascinating natural landscape up close under demanding conditions.

As a volunteer, you will take on diverse and exciting tasks that actively contribute to the protection and preservation of this unique natural environment. These tasks include:

• Reforestation and maintenance work outdoors
• Working with modern telemetry equipment to monitor native wildlife such as pumas, huemuls, and guanacos. Volunteers assist in searching for wildlife, reviewing camera trap footage, and analyzing the collected images.
• Preparing expert reports that serve as the basis for further conservation measures.
• Checking the fences surrounding the protected area.
• Informing visitors about conservation issues and the special features of the reserve.
• Assisting tourists at the reserve entrances and controlling access.
• Data processing and contributing to information gathering are further essential tasks, as is working on specific topics assigned by the wildlife department.

The volunteer house in the nature reserve is a cozy wooden house that reflects the typical style of the region. During their 10-day work placement, volunteers live directly in the refuge, located in the heart of the protected area. They are never alone, as someone is always on-site, ensuring a safe and pleasant atmosphere. For all-female groups, efforts are made (where possible) to ensure that female rangers are also present.

Rooms are shared by a maximum of three people and are gender segregated. Shared bathrooms are available for up to four people. On their three days off, volunteers stay in the staff area in the nearby village of Neltume, where staff members also reside.

The nature center offers internet access, which may be interrupted occasionally due to weather conditions.

Meals are not included. During their work placement at the refuge in the heart of the reserve, volunteers and staff members usually bring food for the 10 days that they stay there. Together, they organize the cooking and thus enjoy a varied and self-directed approach to meals during their stay.

The area is very rural, surrounded by lush, evergreen nature. There are no large supermarkets or shopping centers near Neltume, but there are small shops where you can find everything you need for daily life. There are also a few restaurants. The nearest larger town, Panguipulli, is about 50 minutes away.

The nature reserve is located in southern Chile, about 3 hours south of Temuco, in the Los Ríos region, and is a true paradise for nature lovers. This biological reserve covers a vast area and impresses with its diverse flora and fauna. The dense, mystical rainforest with its centuries-old trees is home to numerous animal species, including rare birds, foxes, and even pumas.

The breathtaking landscape, characterized by majestic volcanoes, clear lakes, and rushing rivers, is particularly captivating. Hiking trails lead visitors to spectacular waterfalls and offer magnificent views of pristine nature.

The reserve is also known for its sustainable tourism project, which combines environmental protection with community development.

With the volunteer work in Panama you support an animal welfare project in the preservation of the natural habitat of sea turtles in the beautiful Veraguas province of Panama. The project site is located in a protected area that was established by the government in 2008. The nature conservation program includes several beaches and strips of land with lush vegetation. It aims to restore and protect both natural flora and fauna.

The region is home to one of the most important breeding grounds for sea turtles on the Panamanian Pacific coast. On the beaches of the reserve you can find 4 different species of turtles laying their eggs. The most common species of sea turtle is the ridley turtle.

 In addition, the hawksbill sea turtle, the green sea turtle and the leatherback turtle come to lay their eggs on the beaches of the reserve.

The aim of the project is to protect the endangered sea turtle species. In addition to protecting the egg-laying sites, a very important part of the work is also educating the local population in the coastal communities. Greater awareness must be achieved with regard to the preservation and protection of these unique animals and their habitat. In addition, new specialists are to be trained to support scientific work.

Upon arrival, each volunteer will be informed about the goal of the conservation project and the most important basic knowledge about the sea turtles before the work begins.

The volunteer project always starts in May with the construction of breeding grounds and the cleaning of the beach and the surrounding areas. From around June, the patrols on the beaches start in order to protect, observe and register turtles as they lay their eggs. If necessary, nests are relocated to the project's safe breeding grounds.

From around June to February, volunteers and the local team monitor the various turtle species as they lay their eggs and note their habits and behavior. The sea turtles come to the beaches to lay their eggs mainly in the months of June to the end of December, with the main season being from August to September. 

So that the eggs of the sea turtles can be protected from predators and illegal theft (turtle eggs are traded as delicacies) and to ensure the growth of the population of the animals in the Pacific, some of the turtle eggs are collected by the volunteers and kept in incubators. The baby turtles hatch after a breeding period of 45-60 days and are then released into their natural habitat, the Pacific Ocean.

During the day, the volunteers help with environmental education projects for the residents of the region. An important part of the work is also monitoring the nests and collecting washed up rubbish on the beaches in order to keep the nesting grounds of the sea turtles clean.

We would like to point out that mother nature is unpredictable and we cannot give any guarantee about the number of sea turtles for a certain period of participation.

You will live in the Volunteer House in the reserve on the Pacific coast. There are shared rooms with bunk beds. You share the room with other volunteers as well as the bathrooms, kitchen and other common areas. The common rooms are simply but comfortably furnished. The Volunteer House can accommodate up to 10 volunteers.

The accommodations have electricity, which should, however, be used very sparingly. Three meals a day are included.

The turtle protection project is located in the southern part of the province of Veraguas directly on the Pacific coast. The capital Panama City is about 6 hours away by car. It is said that Veraguas combines the most beautiful of land and sea.

The area is also called the Pearl of the Pacific. From here, visitors can explore both the Pacific coast and the Caribbean coast, admire majestic mountains, get to know the impressive biodiversity, swim under imposing waterfalls, visit historical sites and, last but not least, relax on dream beaches with fine white sand. The warmth of the people is the perfect addition to this great program.

Panama's capital, Panama City, with its skyscrapers and modern buildings is around 6 hours away by car.

From a tourist point of view, Panama is still rather unknown, actually absolutely wrong we think. The country has an incredible amount to offer in terms of landscape, history and culture - breathtaking nature, diverse flora and fauna, fantastic national parks, an active culture of the indigenous population, sports facilities on water and on land as well as the world-famous Panama Canal in the heart of the pulsating metropolis Panama City - just to mention a few of the attractions that Panama has to offer.

"Pura Vida" is also the motto of this Costa Rica project, as it takes place in the heart of nature. Our project partner is a non-profit organization with 13 hectares of land that plays a crucial role in the conservation of coastal and terrestrial ecosystems on the Nicoya Peninsula, particularly in Playa Ario. The project combines education, research, and innovation to preserve marine and terrestrial habitats. This particularly includes promoting sustainable practices such as the introduction of regenerative agriculture and promoting chemical-free self-sufficiency to ensure food security.

The project's campus is intended as a center for experimentation and idea development, closely related to the process of rural development in Costa Rica and the impacts of development on the local population, economy, and ecosystems. The project offers hands-on educational programs, workshops, and research initiatives focused on environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and the connection between people and nature. It promotes collaboration with local communities to initiate and implement sustainable development projects that provide both ecological and social benefits.

The campus features permaculture systems and an adjacent wildlife reserve. It was designed to utilize local building materials for infrastructure and regenerative agricultural practices for production, creating a model for appropriate rural development that can be replicated at the local or regional level.

Furthermore, this project is dedicated to the protection of sea turtles that come to the beaches of the nature reserve to nest. The project thus makes an important contribution to protecting these endangered marine species and raising awareness about animal welfare and the conservation of our oceans.

This project has two areas of responsibility: agriculture and sea turtle conservation. Sea turtle season is from June to January. Between February and May, the volunteer program focuses on community work and agriculture.

Possible sea turtle-related tasks:

• Beach patrols (night and early morning)
• Building turtle nests
• Maintaining nesting areas
• Identifying species and counting turtle eggs
• Collecting and documenting biodiversity data
• Releasing baby turtles on the beach
• Installing and monitoring camera traps

The weekly schedule will be posted on the task board each week. Activities vary from week to week, and volunteers are expected to be flexible and adapt to changes. Working hours are generally between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Weekends are free for volunteers to enjoy the beach, visit Montezuma or Santa Teresa, participate in tours, or simply relax with a book.

The volunteers live in the Volunteer House. There are shared rooms in six bungalows with a total capacity of approximately 20 people. The facility has three indoor showers, one outdoor shower, and three toilets. The large dining hall, which can accommodate 30 people, is also located on site. A communal kitchen and common areas are also available, as is a classroom for up to 30 people, where workshops and courses are held.

There is a sink for hand washing and clotheslines. Use of the washing machine costs USD 10.

Wi-Fi is not available outside the administration building; there is only one Wi-Fi connection for work-related matters. So, if you want to unwind, this is the place for you . Alternatively, we recommend purchasing a local SIM card so you can be contacted wherever you are (e.g., even on weekends).

Three meals are served daily, prepared by local chefs. If you have allergies or are vegetarian/vegan, this is not a problem. However, volunteers are expected to adhere to meal times, as the dining area is shared by volunteers, rangers, and other staff.

Outside of mealtimes, fruit, fresh fruit juice, and clean tap water are available. Volunteers are welcome to bring food from home or purchase it on-site.

The project is located somewhat remotely in the southwestern part of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, near the small town of Santa Teresa, which boasts various surf schools, several cafés and restaurants, and beautiful beaches. Santa Teresa is internationally renowned for its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere. This region is characterized by its pristine nature, tropical forests, and rich biodiversity.

Mangrove tours, boat trips, hiking, and zip-lining are part of the program offered by local tour operators, as are snorkeling, diving, and surfing. Other nearby towns include Manzanillo Beach, Cabuya and Montezuma, which have equally beautiful beaches and a great atmosphere.

The project site is located within a protected area with nesting sites for sea turtles such as the olive ridley turtle and the critically endangered leatherback turtle. The area is also ideal for birdwatching and beach walks. Playa Arío, just north of the project, is ideal for swimming at high tide. At low tide, visitors can walk over rocks to a shallow lagoon protected by a coral reef—ideal for snorkeling and relaxing.

You can reach the project by bus and ferry from San José. Although the distance is only about 200 km, the journey takes between five and six hours due to road conditions and the ferry ride. The final leg requires a taxi, which costs approximately $100.

If you aspire to live a sustainable lifestyle in harmony with nature or if you just want to experience this form of living, then this volunteer project in Costa Rica on an organic Finca is perfect for you. Located on a hill overlooking the Orosi valley near Paraíso, this Finca is run by professionals devoted to caring for our Mother Earth. The primary objective is to exist as independently as possible, generating a surplus of produce beyond their needs.

Additionally, the Finca aspires to become a benchmark where both the local and international communities can learn more eco-friendly and socially responsible practices. The Finca staff works towards the goal of showing guests and local communities how to live sustainably and develop responsible habits regarding their natural resources. Since 2019, they have practiced permaculture, organic agriculture, bio construction, use medical plants, and maintain a diverse ecosystem for local wildlife.

The Finca has about 1 hectare of land. Over fifty percent of the land is safeguarded secondary forest, boasting trees that are more than half a century old - a refreshing oasis in Costa Rica's agriculturally depleted landscape. Additional sections of the estate encompass a bamboo grove for construction purposes, a food forest featuring more than a hundred fruit-bearing trees, organic gardens aimed at supporting a plant-based nutrition, a seed repository dedicated to preserving local varieties, a bio-factory where they cultivate their own microorganisms, and various bioconstruction endeavors such as a composting toilet without water.

The Finca consists of three houses. There is a shared bedroom and another private one for volunteers. The main building also houses a coworking room and chill area, a large kitchen, and a spacious terrace.

The Finca´s team offers various projects, which encourage a lifestyle and subsistence strategy that preserves the natural resources and establishes a new mindset towards nature.

Please note, if a volunteer has specific skills in fields like construction, bioconstruction, carpentry, marketing, and tropical species identification in the secondary forest, they are invited to focus their participation in one of those specific areas.

As usual in Costa Rica, the day starts early at 6 in the morning. Depending on the day or the individual's responsibilities, volunteers engage in collaborative efforts in one of the earlier-mentioned sectors. Breakfast is served at around 8:30 a.m. Lunch is available at 12:30 p.m.

Afternoons are generally left free for leisure. However, there may be activities planned for the afternoon, like house chores: recycling, tidying up, managing gray water, and fermenting kefir or kombucha, as well as baking sourdough bread.

Typically, the Finca has a wellness activity each week, which takes place in the afternoons, featuring options like dance, yoga, acroyoga, woodland walks, documentaries, and more.

During their free time, volunteers have the chance to explore the beautiful surroundings, go hiking, and visit locations such as waterfalls, hot springs, or archaeological sites. Stroll through the forest or wander the town of La Flor and connect with the locals. You can read a book you’ve brought from home or borrow one from the Finca´s collection. The library holds various titles on permaculture, organic farming, medicinal plants, literature in multiple languages, botany, and beyond! You can also engage in crafts or more.

On weekends, you might be inclined to explore attractive spots nearby, such as the Irazú Volcano, Guayabo National Monument, the Durán Sanatorium (an ancient “haunted” structure), and Tapantí National Park. Weekend trips to the Caribbean or Pacific coast are also available. There are many sights of interest within a distance of between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

During your stay abroad in Costa Rica, you will live in the volunteer house at the finca. There are two houses available with shared rooms. One house can accommodate 3 people, and the other house is available for 1-2 people in a private bedroom (upon request, surcharge required).

The Finca maintains a plant-based diet, with harvests from the gardens, as well as the best quality possible, mainly from local & agro-ecological producers. Volunteers who do not wish to follow a vegan diet can purchase their food, but we highly recommend giving it a try!
You can take the public to the nearby towns. The bus stop is 10 minutes on foot from the farm.

Living and working together on the farm is a special experience that promotes a sense of community and cultural exchange.

Wi-Fi Internet is available on the Finca.

You can also inquire about additional services such as Spanish classes, massage, Reiki, Akashic Records readings, theoretical permaculture classes, dance classes, etc. These have an extra cost.

The volunteer project is located in La Flor near the town of Paraiso de Cartago. San José, the country’s capital, is about 2 hours by bus. At Paraiso de Cartago, the word “paraíso” literally applies. This heavenly city lies in the southeast of the province of Cartago and is known for its idyllic landscape and dream beaches. In the Cartago region, you can find more than just beaches, the hinterland amazes visitors with lush nature and perfectly formed volcanoes. There are many ways to explore this beautiful area such as hiking, outdoor sports or cultural activities.

There is a subtropical climate and due to the higher altitude of the project site, the temperatures are pleasantly warm throughout the year with an average of 25 °C a day. At night it cools down. The rainiest months are March, April and May.

Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Costa Rica, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.

The Manu National Park is located in the middle of the Peruvian Amazonas region in south eastern Peru. The territory reaches almost 19,000 km2 (7,336 m2) and was declared a national park in 1973, to serve as a protection and preservation zone for vegetation and wildlife. Additionally, it aims to preserve the traditional lifestyle and culture of the native Peruvian population. Due to UNESCO recognizing the unique species and rich diversity in this region of Peru, the Manu National Park was declared part of the world natural heritage and biosphere reserve in 1987.

Today, native indigenous people still live in this isolated national park, shielded from the rest of the world. Much of the area can only be visited for research purposes. This volunteer project is supervised by a Peruvian NGO (non-governmental organization), which cooperates with local residents to improve sustainability and the consideration of the political rights of the indigenous population. 

It is of upmost importance to our partners, to always consider the concerns of the local population, when trying to find sustainable and economical ways to come up with a long-term solution to the problematic sensitivity of Manu National Park’s ecosystem. National and international volunteers support this NGO’s efforts to protect the vegetation and wildlife while contributing to the preservation of conservation areas.

Your participation in this volunteer program should be derived from your desire to help the environment and the native population of the Peruvian rainforest.

The tasks that volunteers can help with in this project do not require any prior knowledge or skills. However, there are plenty of tasks that require the volunteer to be disciplined and responsible. Tasks may include planting, maintaining the infrastructure, data collection of flora and fauna, and the reintegration of animal species. It is important to note, that there are activities that require a certain level of independence, initiative, and advanced Spanish skills, such as environmental education workshops and community work with the indigenous people.

No matter where your help is needed, your personal skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated. Through your dedication, motivation, and support, you can help find alternative ways to preserve and develop the reserve even further. Furthermore, you can always rely on the understanding and the support of your project supervisor.

This volunteer project is located in the Peruvian Amazon jungle and gives you the chance to immerse into the adventures of the wilderness. You will learn a lot about the rainforest and the local culture, not only during your daily volunteer work, but also during fun activities, such as swimming, hiking, water sports, and animal watching. During your life in the jungle you will be surrounded by an immense variety of species, plants, colorful birds, apes, reptiles, and other exotic animals.

The activities that can be carried out within the protected area are:

• Sustainable Agriculture. Cultivation of organic polyculture fields for the reproduction of alternative and sustainable resources.
• There are plantations of copuatzu (white cocoa) and other fruit trees. These seedlings require special care (control, cleaning, transplanting, seedbed preparation, composting, inventories, etc.
• Patrol. The reserve has 3 trails for wildlife observation activities (monkey species, wild boar, coatis, anteaters, porcupines, exotic birds, insects and sometimes cougars, jaguar tracks etc. The work consists in registering and photographing the largest number of existing species in the reserve.
• Reforestation Activities: The goal is to create a natural barrier and restore the water level of the Laguna Seca Circuit.
• Repair and sustainable maintenance of installations within the reserve.
• Cleaning and maintenance of the hiking trails through the nature reserve.
• Support in the wildlife sanctuary (currently undergoing organizational change due to new government proposals).

The type of accommodation that will be arranged for you depends on your work area and tasks as well as the duration of your volunteer work. Volunteers live in a two-story volunteer house with 6 double rooms. 

Volunteers who live here, typically help with the reforestation and maintenance of the reserve. For those who are more interested in helping with environmental workshops or animal protection centers, a host family accommodation is usually arranged.

Meals are provided according to the living circumstances in the jungle, which means that mainly vegetarian food is available, since the storage of meat dishes is rather difficult.

There is no electricity in the reserve and there is running water. Visits to the nearest village are used to charge electronic devices (e.g. cell phones, batteries). The distance to the village is 10 minutes by boat. Volunteers need to bring flashlights.

There is no internet connection in the project, only a cellular connection. In the close-by village there is internet connection.

The nature reserve is located at the edge of the Manu National Park, about 250 km east of Cusco, Peru. Due to poor road conditions, the journey from Cusco can take up to 8 hours by car. The facilities of the nature reserve, where the Volunteer House is located, can only be reached by boat.

However, all the effort to get there is worth it a thousand times, because the Manu National Park is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. Here you will find the deepest jungle, high mountains, adventurous bridges, and an incredible abundance of exotic animals such as sloths, spectacled bears, jaguars, colorful birds and parrots as well as lizards, to name just a few.

Indigenous communities are the only humans who permanently settle in this area. The Manu National Park is a true Garden of Eden and the perfect place for everyone who wants to put their priorities far, far away from every hectic pace of modern everyday life and want to immerse themselves in a completely different, simple, sometimes difficult, but beautiful way of life.

There are rumors that Paititi, a legendary but long-lost Inca city is hidden in this area - but no one has found it yet. Due to the remote location and lack of internet connection, you will have little contact with your normal life during your time in the project. This may sound terrifying at first, but it can also be very healing, relaxing and educational.

Experience an unforgettable and enriching adventure in Costa Rica. Become active in animal protection and immerse yourself in the fascinating Costa Rican wildlife. In this volunteer program you will support a local animal rescue center.

The mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and, ideally, release wild animals native to Costa Rica back into the wild. Currently there are about 150 animals at the center (this number can change up and down). The Animal Rescue Center's philosophy includes a model that focuses on species conservation (plants and animals), education and research to strive for a better future for local wildlife. An important component is raising public awareness of issues such as animal and nature conservation. The center is open to visitors and there are educational events, workshops and guided tours for young and old.

The animal rescue center works closely with the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica (MINAE). After being rescued, wild animals in need (due to illegal trade, sick, wounded or abused animals, etc.) reach the center via various routes, primarily via MINAE, in order to receive veterinary care and be rehabilitated. Here they find refuge and at the same time medical treatment, rehabilitation and ultimately release into their natural environment. 

We would like to point out that not every animal can be released again. Animals that have had serious injuries that prevent them from climbing, flying, hunting, searching for food, or moving independently and safely in the wild in the long term are considered unreleaseable. In addition, animals that are desensitized to humans due to human interaction (e.g. by being kept as pets) are not considered suitable for release. The rescue center offers refuge and a lifelong home for these animals in their protected areas.

Around 25 people, both permanent employees and volunteers, work for the welfare of the animals. The multidisciplinary team has been dedicated to this task with great passion for over 20 years and has been able to give countless wild animals a second life. The animal rescue center specializes in animals such as toucans, sloths and owls, but also helps a large number of other wild animals such as weasels, porcupines, wild cats, kinkajous, parrots, otters, armadillos, raccoons, reptiles, etc.

The animal rescue center is idyllically embedded in evergreen tropical nature in the Alajuela region. The surrounding area offers a breathtaking backdrop of mountains, rivers and waterfalls and is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Here life pulsates in all shapes and colors!

Volunteers from all over the world who have a deep desire to become active in animal protection and who want to learn more about the local flora and fauna in Costa Rica are welcome at the animal rescue center. You have the opportunity to take part in activities that contribute to animal protection, animal care and the continued existence of the animal rescue station.

Volunteers help with everyday activities such as providing proper nutrition for wildlife and play a key role in other important activities such as: supporting animal husbandry, coordinating events for the educational program or improving animal enclosures.

You will work with a team of experienced animal keepers and veterinarians. The tasks are interesting, exciting and definitely life-enriching. Volunteers are divided according to their skills and knowledge. The current needs of the center and the personal interests of the volunteers are taken into account.

Responsibilities include:

Animal husbandry and care:
Volunteers are an essential part of the area of animal husbandry. This includes cleaning the enclosures and monitoring the animals' behavior to ensure they are safe and well. Daily tasks include preparing and providing food tailored to the specific needs of different animals. Chopping fruit, preparing fish or meat for the animals is just as much a part of it as cleaning and disinfecting the animal enclosures, food and water bowls and other areas where the animals are kept.

Support for educational programs:
Another important role of volunteers is supporting educational programs. This includes helping to coordinate events, preparing educational materials, or even participating in outreach activities. Educating the public about species conservation is a central part of the animal rescue center's mission.

Maintenance and enrichment projects:
Animal enclosures must be regularly inspected, improved and repaired. For many animals it is important that they do not get bored in captivity but rather stay busy. Enrichment projects are important, such as setting up climbing branches, providing objects that can be used as toys, preparing places to sleep, etc. Engaging with objects/toys is crucial for the animals' mental and physical stimulation. Their creativity in developing and implementing these activities improves their quality of life.

Volunteers are not expected to have any special experience or knowledge. What is important is a sense of responsibility, team spirit and a healthy work attitude. The most important requirement is certainly a heart for animals and the desire to help them.

A typical working day lasts from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Please note that working hours may vary depending on workload and number of volunteers. Two consecutive days per week are free - not necessarily on weekends.

The volunteers live together in the Volunteer House very close to the animal rescue center. The house has a total of 4 shared rooms with sleeping accommodation for up to 16 volunteers, 3 bathrooms and a large living area with a kitchen. The Volunteer House is modern and has ample common areas. It offers space to relax after work and exchange ideas with other volunteers, chat, play or make plans for your free time. A washing machine and Wi-Fi internet are available in the Volunteer House.

The volunteer project includes daily breakfast, lunch and dinner. Traditional Costa Rican dishes are primarily served. Tasty and healthy.

As an alternative, or if the volunteer house is full, volunteers can also stay in a local homestay. In this case, they live with local families in a single room with a private or shared bathroom. Meals are provided at the homestays. All homestay are within walking distance of the animal rescue center or just a short bus ride away.

The animal rescue center is located in San Isidro. The town of Heredia is about 20 minutes away. It takes around 30 minutes to the capital San José and around 45 minutes to the international airport.

Despite its proximity to the capital, this area is characterized by lush greenery and lovely landscapes. With the harmonious mix of urban flair and rural idyll, tropical vegetation and an eventful history, the region offers optimal conditions for an exciting volunteer program. The animal rescue center is located in the heart of the so-called "Valle Central" at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters, surrounded by green hills and coffee plantations. 

The center of the nearest town is lined with shady trees, colorful flowerbeds and the central square, which serves as a meeting point for young and old.

This centric location offers volunteers a wide range of opportunities for leisure activities. Outdoor sports enthusiasts and nature lovers as well as volunteers interested in culture and history will find an optimal balance to their work here. The country’s capital and historical places are just as easily accessible as national parks and nature reserves. Even trips to the Caribbean or Pacific coast can be easily organized.

Take an active part in cleaning our beaches and oceans from plastic and other types of garbage. Volunteers are the engine of this fantastic eco volunteer project as with their enthusiasm and love for the environment they help to achieve the project’s goal of significantly reducing plastic pollution on the coastlines and the ocean.

This meaningful Volunteer program takes place in Costa Rica. The country’s name means “Rich Coast” and any visitor who has been to Costa Rica knows why. Costa Rica is sandwiched between the Caribbean coast and the Pacific cost and has countless of dream beaches, from calm coves to crashing surf, palm-tree-backed beaches to rocky coastlines. But even this paradise is not spared from man-made problems: Plastic and other trash is a major issue along Costa Rica’s beaches.

Every single day of the year, approximately 8 million pieces of trash find their way into our oceans, and is washed up along the coastline around the world. This not only spoils the beautiful sight of the beaches, but also is very harmful for the local wildlife and sensitive marine ecosystems.

This volunteer program has been working very hard since its inception back in 2018 to protect the country’s unique marine flora and fauna. Become a volunteer in Costa Rica with us to keep this important movement going.

Beach clean-ups are the cornerstone of the organization’s work as daily expeditions take place in different locations of the country to collect the most plastic and trash possible from beaches and rivers. Volunteers from all over the world support the mission to clean the coastlines from plastic pollution while having an awesome time doing it.

Did you know that a vanishingly small proportion of only 9% of all plastic in the world is recycled? The rest of it usually ends up in oceans or goes into landfills. So, this is where our volunteer program makes a huge difference. The collected trash is not transported to landfills but sorted for upcycling purposes. Upcycling products range from concrete pavers and cement blocks to composite wood products and even asphalt. It is a win-win, as the plastic that is incorporated to these products reduces the amount of raw materials needed.

One of the newest milestone projects are Artificial Reefs that are installed just offshore in a local marine reserve. These structures are specifically designed to promote coral growth. They also offer protection for fish and other marine species. Volunteers get hands-on experience constructing these artificial reefs and can observe them in the nearby ocean waters. This project is quite new but has had amazing results with fish and corals populating the spheres.

Volunteers take an active role in beach clean-up expeditions, but they will not only participate in beach clean-ups, but also in the recycling process, classifying plastic for recycling and reusing, community & social projects, upkeep (washing equipment, painting, maintenance chores), planting trees, watching documentaries, releasing turtles (in turtle season), building artificial reefs just to name a few.

The work schedule may change from Monday to Friday as the working hours depend on factors like weather, the tides, and current needs.

 Typically, the work starts at 7 am (as it is usual in Costa Rica) and ends in the early afternoon. Weekends are off unless there are corporate clean-ups where the volunteers are asked to help.
Walking the beaches every day can be tiring sometimes, so volunteers can also help in several ecological projects that are run by the organization, such as a butterfly farm, a hydroponic garden, or maintaining the trails for birdwatching like sign elaboration and painting.

Volunteers can be sure to have a great time in Costa Rica while making a difference, giving back to the environment, and helping clean the beaches. They live in the volunteer house at the volunteer camp which is situated within a beautiful resort right on the beach.

The place is surrounded by thousands of acres of pristine lush rainforest and three dream beaches. Volunteers are allowed to use the resort’s facilities like hiking trails, several swimming pools, hot tubs, beautiful gardens, restaurants, minimarkets and even activities offered by the resort. 

The camp can accommodate up to 12 volunteers in shared dormitories.* Bathrooms have hot water and are also shared. Three meals per day are provided by the resort’s restaurant. If volunteers are on an expedition lunch will be served on the beach. Good internet access is available at the camp.

The volunteer camp is located in the heart of the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, very close to Jaco Beach and only about 1.5 hours from San José. The camp is surrounded by evergreen nature, amazing beaches, close to rivers and waterfalls. This region is known for its sustainable practices.

Jaco Beach is a popular vacation destination with visitors from all over the world. It is known for very good surfing spots, dream beaches and a laid-back lifestyle. It is an ideal place for volunteering while enjoying the country’s natural beauty and “pura vida” life.

There are a lot of activities that volunteers can do in their spare time. To name just a few: snorkeling, bird watching tours, hiking, kayaking, beach volleyball, mini golf, beach soccer, yoga, tennis, table games, ping pong, visits to waterfalls, canopy/zip line, boat tours, surfing lessons, and so on….

Our volunteer program takes place in a local organization that works to protect and conserve the delicate biodiversity on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica. The organization was created to stop hunting and illegal logging and today works closely with the Ministry of the Environment and the nearby Corcovado National Park.

They believe in transformation through education and therefore support governmental and non-governmental institutions in their pursuit of sustainable, balanced and equitable development. The focus is local, but the impact is global.

The non-profit organization strives to protect Costa Rica's natural heritage for future generations by developing local communities through educating and empowering (especially women and children), as well as promoting nature reserves and sustainable tourism.

This program has its origins in the initiative to protect nature in one of the most biologically intensive places in the world and to provide the local population with an economic income away from hunting, poaching, overexploitation, and deforestation. Local communities have great potential for rural tourism and sustainable agriculture.

Our volunteer project helps train community members and local small businesses on “best practices for sustainable tourism and agriculture.” This will reduce poverty and minimize human environmental impact, making responsible and sustainable economic development possible in Costa Rica.

In this volunteer program, you will support a combination of forest restoration, regenerative agriculture and community work activities. The local families who work with the project are undergoing a transformation to change the way of farming to regenerative agriculture. Your help in this project makes a really big difference to the local flora & fauna.

Volunteers work four to six hours a day in this project and have the weekends off. You can then either relax, do something on your own, or take part in one of the excursions organized by the project (water sports, snorkeling, diving, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, etc.).
The work is divided into 3 different areas. Possible tasks may include:

Reforestation: The team responsible for restoring the local ecosystem takes on the following activities:
• Planting certain plants that serve to attract pollinator insects
• Working in the tree nursery, planting trees
• Collecting seeds and planting seedlings
• Building perches for birds to help them disperse seeds
• Setting up camera traps to monitor wildlife activity

Organic regenerative agriculture: The organic farming team changes lives and land every day. Regenerative agriculture helps local families use their resources more sustainably.
• Making compost and preparing organic fertilizers
• Building beds and preparing them for sowing
• Distributing microorganisms
• Working with medicinal and aromatic plants

Community Work: Bahía Drake is a very isolated area with many social and educational needs. The community work team aims to promote educational, sports and cultural activities for children, young people and adults.
• Supporting courses for boys and girls
• Art workshops
• Sports workshops
• Craft workshop
• Environmental education with children
• Assisting in the beautification of public areas

The volunteers stay in a cozy guest house in Bahía Drake.

Intercultural integration is achieved through connection to the local community. The volunteers can learn a lot about life, culture but also the challenges that the locals face.

Common rooms and shared bathrooms are available to volunteers. 

There is running warm water. There is also a common room available for volunteers. The volunteer program includes 3 meals. If you have any special diet (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or allergy-friendly), please let us know in advance.

Internet WIFI is available.

Note: In Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer projects take place, the cellular or internet connection is not always reliable and fast.

The volunteer project is based on the beautiful Osa Peninsula. Although it is a relatively small area, it is home to a huge biodiversity and diverse tropical habitats. These include rainforests, coastal wetlands and mountain forests. The volunteer project borders the famous Corcovado National Park, which is the largest protected area in Costa Rica and, according to National Geographic, one of the “most biologically active regions in the world”.

The national park was founded in the 1970s and since then both Costa Rican authorities and organizations as well as foreign NGOs have tried to protect the natural resources of this species-rich peninsula. 

The area where the volunteer program is located is called Bahía Drake. It is located directly on the Pacific coast about 19 kilometers north of the Corcovado National Park. It is a very original and at the same time remote area, only accessible via a 45-minute boat trip from Sierpe. About 25 km west of Bahía Drake lies Caño Island, a marine protected area and home to several species of corals, whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and lots of colorful fish.

The volunteer program is carried out throughout the Bahía Drake, especially in small towns such as Los Ángeles, Caletas, Los Planes, El Progreso and Agujitas.

The main attraction for tourists is the fantastic landscape, a mix of tropical rainforest and dream beaches with turquoise blue clear water. Visitors will find incredible biodiversity and unique peace here. In Agujitas, the largest town with around 400 inhabitants, there are small hotels, 3 supermarkets, a church, souvenir shops, an ice cream parlor, medical care and bars.

Agujitas is one of the main entrances to the Corcovado National Park and the marine reserve surrounding Caño Island.

In this volunteer program, you will assist a nonprofit organization that supports local community projects. The volunteer program is located in the buffer zone of La Amistad International Park in the border area with Panama. This area has been declared a Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

As a volunteer, you will be involved in various areas of ecotourism, nature conservation and community work. This volunteer position is part of the “Sustainable Tourism” sub-program. This program was created in 2011 to protect nature in one of the most biologically intensive places in the world and to provide the local population with an economic income away from hunting and poaching.

Local communities have great potential for rural tourism. Today they offer visitors an insight into their way of life and economy, offer overnight stays and short tours and sell their locally and sustainably produced products.

The nonprofit organization promotes training of community members and local small businesses on “best practices for sustainable tourism.” This will reduce poverty and minimize human environmental impact, making responsible and sustainable economic development possible in Costa Rica.

In this project you will not only be immersed in stunning nature, but you will also do your part to protect the habitat of thousands of animal species.

A small “warning”: If you want to work here, you should be able to walk well, because long distances on impassable terrain are part of the work. Adaptability is also required: the way of life is rustic and very spontaneous. But the warmth of the people and the exceptional biodiversity in the area more than make up for it.

In addition to working in small businesses in local communities, volunteers take part in various activities, ranging from the preparation and cleaning of communities, communal works such as helping to paint schools, building, recycling stations, helping with community events and fundraising activities. We always like to know if volunteers have any special skills so that we can put them to good use. So, if you are a teacher, carpenter, NASA scientist, juggler or acrobat, please let us know.

It is important to note that, in addition to the preset program, other tasks will arise daily in response to changing needs, weather conditions and the availability of materials or labor.

Typically, each volunteer will be assigned a workload that would be about 4-6 hours of work per day. Of course, there is always more work available, so if you ever get bored, you can only ask a coordinator how you can help.

Volunteers have at least one day off per week. You can then either relax, do something on your own, or take part in one of the excursions organized by the project.

• Accompaniment on nature trails and hiking trails
• Garbage collection campaigns
• Maintaining trails
• Maintain and improve the website and social networks
• Collecting and drying coffee

You will live in a local homestay; contact with the country and its people couldn't be more direct. This will boost your Spanish skills and you will also be right at the source for the best excursion tips.

In a homestay in the local communities, you are not just a visitor, you are part of it. You will have a single room while the bathroom is shared.

Accommodation includes full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) with local dishes. If you need special food (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or allergy-friendly), please let us know in advance.

The accommodations sometimes have internet access, which can be weak in some places. We recommend you to get a local cell sim card (e.g. at the airport or supermarkets) to have internet access.

The project site itself is about five hours' drive south of San José. It is located in the idyllic area of Biolley, Buenos Aires in the Puntarenas province, not far from the border with Panama.

The main attraction of this area is the Parque Internacional La Amistad (shared between Costa Rica and Panama). Due to its huge extent across two countries, the dense cloud forests and diverse terrain at different altitudes, this protected area has immense biological diversity.

In addition to mammals such as puma, jaguar, ocelot, coati, tapir, sloths and lots of monkey species, more than 263 species of amphibians and reptiles have been observed. On the other hand, the colorful bird world is represented with 400 species, including the rare quetzal, eagles, hummingbirds, parrots, etc.

Possible leisure activities are as diverse as the area itself. Various types of outdoor sports are available, visits to local communities and even trips to beaches along the Pacific coast.

Would you like a job with a view of the sea and a life deeply rooted in ancestral ways of life? With this interesting volunteer project right on Chile's beautiful Pacific coast, we give you the opportunity to live and work in Chile's first eco-village. The beautiful sandy beach is about 15 to 30 minutes away (depending on the transportation you use). The tiny eco-village is a non-profit project that shows how we can live in a way that conserves resources. Profits are reinvested in sustainability projects. Sustainability, learning and entertainment are the axes of the project.

The project is located close to the picturesque seaside resort of Maitencillo, approximately 2 hours northwest of Santiago de Chile. Maintencillo is a well-known and popular holiday resort for Chileans and international guests. Maitencillo is one of the jewels of Chile's Pacific coast, yet not too far from the lively capital Santiago. The place is surrounded by forests and a lovely landscape. It is characterized by the long, beautiful sandy beach. There is a small harbor where you can buy fresh fish and seafood from local fishermen every day.

The eco-village itself was inaugurated in 2018. The founder's great idea was to create a maximum of beauty and comfort with a minimum of materials to show people that you can live very well with little. The founder of the small eco-village truly succeeded in this goal, and it beautifully illustrates his life's work.

The eco-village covers 16 hectares and has 5 km of hiking trails. From different spots you can enjoy sea-view. The eco-village is open to day visitors and overnight guests and offers simple but cozy glamping-style accommodation options. Guests live in harmony with nature and can take part in activities such as guided tours, workshops, yoga and the like.

The small, idyllic village has a cozy kitchen area, a swimming pool, nice light-filled rooms and spacious outdoor areas. A special feature are the recreated ancient ways of life such as a Bedouin hut, an African cave, Neanderthal hut, Inca garden, Mayan oven, an amphitheater, etc. All buildings were built with elements from nature. The objects and textile designs are inspired by different tribal eras and the five first civilizations of humanity (Maya, Inca, China, Mesopotamia and India).

The tasks of the volunteers who live and work here primarily revolve around the ongoing maintenance and expansion of the small eco-village. You will learn a lot about a sustainable lifestyle, resource-saving construction, and gardening according to ancient Maya and Inca traditions. You help maintain the mini-village and keep it clean. With guidance, you can also bring in your own creativity and let your ideas run wild.

Such a large property requires a lot of work. The park and trails must always be inspected, maintained and cleaned. 

Overnight guests come mainly on weekends. If necessary, volunteers can help attend the guests.

Working hours are approximately 4-5 hours per day, 6 days a week. Maitencillo is not far away (approx. 7 minutes by taxi) and there is also time during the week to relax in the lovely seaside resort or on the beautiful beach.

This program is an excellent combination of work, learning and fun.

The volunteers live directly in the pretty eco-village in a shared room with a shared bathroom. The rooms are flooded with light and built mainly from wood, which creates a very homy atmosphere.

The fully equipped and large kitchen is available to volunteers where they can store groceries and prepare their own meals. A supermarket is 1 km away.

The location of the eco-village has a pleasant climate all year round. In summer it is still cooler in the morning and it only gets really hot in the afternoon. Winters are mild with irregular rainfall.

Maitencillo is a small town in the Valparaíso region and is located directly on a picturesque sandy beach. The capital Santiago de Chile is approximately 160 km away. Worth seeing UNESCO World Heritage city of Valparaíso is about an hour away.

The area around Maitencillo is characterized by dream beaches and wooded hinterland. The landscape is very idyllic and attracts many Santiaguinos (residents of the capital Santiago) who want to take a break from hectic city life, especially in summer and on long weekends.

The main activities include sports such as surfing, stand-up padel, paragliding, swimming.

In the Chilean summer, tourist activity reaches its peak. Many small shops and handicraft stalls, as well as lots of restaurants and bars round off the entertainment offering in Maitencillo.

Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Chile, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.
