Volunteer Work, Nature Protection
Lago Verde, Coyhaique Province, Aysen Region, Patagonia
flexible start and end dates between October and April
Patagonia always manages to cast a spell over people. The pristine landscapes, the breathtaking mountains, the endless sky, the exciting wildlife - Patagonia is simply a fascinating place.
The combined nature conservation and tourism project is hidden in the northern part of the Aysén region on a piece of earth that few people have seen before. Characterized by ancient evergreen forests, crystal clear rivers and lagoons, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, and an amazing wildlife. Volunteering in this nature conservation project will bring you back thousands of years to a time when nature was still natural in the truest sense of the word.
The founders of the nature reserve were so impressed by this intact landscape that they decided to make it their life's work, to protect this unique environment and secure it for future generations. Since 2010 they have acquired large amounts of land along the Escondido River and around the lake of the same name. The area connects to the Quelat National Park. Agreements have been made with the Chilean Forestry Authority on how the area can be protected and made accessible for sustainable and controlled tourism. In recent years, hiking trails, small bridges, stairs, viewing platforms and a small camp with renewable energies for up to 6 visitors have been built with very little impact on nature.
The nature conservation project is still in its infancy. Volunteers help to develop and maintain the nature park sustainably. As a volunteer, you should not be afraid of being in nature all day, working hard and living in a very remote but absolutely spectacular area. The project is looking for volunteers who want to work hands-on and who do not fear to get dirty. You will be involved in land, forest, and construction work.
The exact work schedule will be assigned on site, considering current needs, the number of volunteers and your own strengths and abilities.
The volunteers work about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. During free time, they can explore the breathtaking nature that surrounds them and engage in outdoor activities.
The tasks can include:
- Field and forest work
- Building hiking trails
- Creating signs
- Working in the vegetable garden
- Clearing fields
- Feeding and caring for animals (horses, sheep)
- Assisting guest and tourists (January and February)
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Volunteers stay in 2 person-shared cabins or domo shaped tents (domos). Hot water showers and solar power is available as well as limited internet access. In a common area mostly local food will be prepared by everyone helping on the project. Groceries are provided by the project.
After finishing the gardens and greenhouses, a grand part of the food will be grown directly at the park.
You will live at a place surrounded by evergreen nature, far away from civilization.
The location of the park can only be reached from the village by a 30-minute boat ride across the lake or by a 3-hour hike along its shore. The closest village has about 300 inhabitants and offers basic services.
Leaving the park will be limited to once-a-week maximum. Free time can be spent on the park enjoying its amazing nature and landscapes. Horses, canoes etc. are available for volunteers.
The breathtaking landscapes and beautiful nature undoubtedly make up for the seclusion.
The nature reserve is surrounded by a dream setting with a unique mountain landscape and is the perfect place for people who are looking for contact with nature. There are hiking trails through pristine nature, viewpoints, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and outdoor sports such as kayaking, horse riding and sport fishing. It is situated on the border with Argentina, the closest village is Lago Verde in the province of Coyhaique with just 300 inhabitants. The community is very rural, with the main activities of the population being agriculture and forestry.
Patagonia is also characterized by its remoteness, ancient traditions and rich cultural heritage. It's like traveling back in time, in Patagonia the clocks seem to have stopped.
The volunteer project offers the participants the opportunity to live and work for a while in a fabulous place in the midst of Patagonian wilderness.
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Chile, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.
