Volunteer Work, Child Care, Health
flexible start and end dates, year-round
The sponsor of the volunteer project is a Colombian foundation that was established 15 years ago by a pediatrician following the mission to give children with serious or chronic diseases and their families a safe and loving home while they are being treated with medical care. The foundation welcomes children who suffer from a chronic or difficul to treat disease, such as cancer, HIV, cleft lip or palate, as well as hearing and visual impariments. The infirmary can accommodate 20 children and their family members.
Many of the families come from remote areas of Colombia or from neighboring Venezuela, where they do not have access to hospitals and the necessary medical treatment or they simply cannot afford it.
The foundation covers all costs for treatment, accommodation, meals and transportation to the hospital. The children receive the necessary medical care to improve their health condition and are accompanied by their parents throughout the treatment.
In 2017 the new building was inaugurated on the site of the Ecoparque la Sabana in Tocancipá. Although it is only around 40 km north of the capital Bogotá, the volunteer project is located in a breathtaking and idyllic landscape. In the surrounding green areas and in the large garden, the children have space to play, but also a place where they can find serenity and peace.
Boredom hardly ever occurs! As a volunteer, you support the employees and the families in their everyday tasks.
- Helping the children with their homework
- Playing, drawing, painting, singing, dancing, etc. with the children
- Making board games with the children and their families
- Playing outdoors with the kids and doing outdoor activities
In addition, the families of the children are always happy to have a helping hand in the kitchen or when preparing birthdays and other celebrations.
Additionally, you have the opportunity to help in the ecological project of Ecoparque Sabana and to contribute to the conservation of the rich biodiversity of the region's flora and fauna.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
So that you are always right in the middle of it instead of just being there, you too, like the families of the children, will live directly on the site of the volunteer project. Through the intensive contact with the families and the employees, you quickly will become part of the team, improve your Spanish and you can spend a lot of valuable time with the children. Depending on the occupancy, a single room with bathroom or a shared room, also with in-suite bathroom, is available for you. The shared room can accommodate a maximum of three additional volunteers (mixed or separated by gender).
The volunteer project includes full board; breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as the typical snack "las onces" are freshly prepared every day.
At the weekend you have the opportunity to explore the nightlife of Bogotá, go hiking through the Ecoparque or you may want to plan a weekend trip with other volunteers.
Tocancipá is a small town founded by Spanish settlers in the La Sabana region, 40 km north of the capital Bogotá. A stroll through the restored historic town center from the 16th century reveals Colombia's colonial past. Tocancipá is a picturesque little town surrounded by nature and invites to hiking trips in the area, for example on the Camino del Gone hiking trail. It is also worth visiting the waterfall along the Quebrada Honda river or the Piedras de Sevilla and Rocas del Abra rock formations.
Tocancipá is also the location of the "largest smallest brewery in Colombia", the Bogotá Beer Company. On a tour of the brewery, visitors learn everything about the beer brewing process and the history of the company, and can sip a few samples. The Parque Jaime Duque amusement park, founded in 1983, is very close to the volunteer project and invites you to linger with its many attractions and great entertainment.
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Colombia, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.
