Volunteer Work, Nature Protection
Rio Puelo Valley, Cochamó, Patagonia
Year round, flexible start and end dates. In the winter months between May and the end of September, the weather is very cold, rainy, sometimes with snowfall, so there are often no tourists on site. For no so weather-resistant participants, the best time to participe is between October and April.
This volunteer project is located in the beautiful, idyllic area of the Rio Puelo in northern Patagonia and is dedicated to nature conservation, sustainable tourism and environmental education.
The entire region is part of this project and local farmers, hostel owners, tour operators, public entities and many more work together in this project. Tourism activities are offered on a sustainable basis and food is grown in organic agriculture.
The region is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts and is perfect for enjoying kayaking or climbing adventures in your free time, hiking or riding excursions or watching birds and other animals. In order to offer tips and tours, the municipality has founded a small tourism center to help tourists get to know this fascinating region better.
Home-made handicrafts are also offered for sale here. Depending on your talent and interest, of course in coordination with our partners and depending on their needs, you can get involved in one work area or try each one.
Warning, this project is not for city people! The nearest towns of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt are each about three hours away by car and can therefore only be visited on days off.
The tasks in this project are as varied as the local agents involved: local government, farmers, craftsmen, operators of hostels and providers of tours and adventure sports work hand in hand. Depending on your interests and talents, you can contribute and express your wishes.
The tasks are assigned on site, depending on the needs, the season and weather, you can do various of the following tasks, among others:
- Construction and maintenance of hiking trails and campsites
- Assistance with the sale of handicrafts
- Event planning/generating ideas for the development of sustainable tourism
- Participation in environmental education in local schools or youth groups
- Production of firewood
- Repair and installation of fences
- Food storage for the animals
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
A single or shared room in a local homestay or a shared room in the guest house is included. You will become part of the typical life of the region and get to know the inhabitants of northern Patagonia in their everyday life. speaking Spanish all the time will certainly be a challenge, but also very gratifying. In both options, you have access to all common areas, the bathrooms are shared. Full board is included.
During the summer months (January - March) the accommodation might take place in a large, walk-in tent. (Important: please bring a sleeping bag!)
The Cochamó region is over 1,000 km south of Santiago de Chile and is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas in the country. The nearest major cities, Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, are about 3 hours away from the village of Cochamó.
The area is often referred to as "Chilean Yosemite", because there are perfect climbing walls in places that are in no way inferior in difficulty and beauty to those in the Yosemite National Park.
The region is famous all over Chile for its beauty and yet is still an insider tip, due to its location and the fairly simple infrastructure. There are no luxury hotels there and only a few tourist attractions that can be reached by car. You have to hike, to see the most beautiful pearls (you can also do the main hiking trails on horseback).
Tourist accommodation there is in simple hostels and guest houses, on campsites or in lodges. Who comes in spite of the lack of luxury, is rewarded with a natural beauty that is second to none: Crystal-clear rivers, waterfalls in the primeval forest, small lagoons that invite you to swim and steeply rising rocks form the landscape, which is home to a diverse fauna and flora.
The climate is temperate and it rains often, even in summer (December to February). In summer the temperatures rise to about 25 degrees, in winter they fluctuate around 5 degrees, there is also sometimes frost. The months of May-August have the highest rainfall, including snow, and the lowest temperatures.
