Volunteer Work, Animal Welfare
close to Caacupé
year round, start and end dates are flexible
This animal protection program, which was founded in 2014, has been an official organization in Paraguay since 2015. Located in the highlands of the “Cordillera de los Altos”, south of the city of Caacupé, the volunteer project cares for around 60 dogs and cats (number subject to changes!). They rescue sick and hurt animals from the streets, rehabilitate them, and give them medical treatments. Once they have recovered, the project looks for new owners to adopt them.
Right now, the organization does not yet have its own property and shelter. Building a shelter is planned for the near future, as soon as there are enough funds. Once it is up and running, they hope to take in even more animals and build an animal clinic. This is set to offer a 24/7 emergency service so that they don’t have to depend on the veterinarians in Asunción, 60 kilometers away. Unfortunately, many animals are abandoned on the streets by their owners and do not receive medical treatment, often dying from their diseases.
In the animal shelter, the cats and dogs are treated, cared for, and sterilized. They are also vaccinated, so that viral infections cannot spread among the animals. The ongoing success of this project not only depends on financial support, but also volunteers. If you are an animal lover and would like to live in South America for a while, to get to know a new culture and people, helping animals in need, this project is perfect for you.
The landscape around the project site is very diverse and seems almost untouched. Vegetation includes fruit-bearing trees, palm trees, and many kinds of flowers. Overall, there is diverse wildlife to be seen, so this region is like a dream for any nature lover. On quiet hiking trails, you can enjoy beautiful views on Caacupé and Lake Ypacaraí.
As a volunteer for this animal protection project, you will have the chance to engage yourself in many different areas.
Although no prior skills are required, you should love animals and know how to work both responsibly and independently.
You will be part of the team and enjoy a great working environment. In your free time, you will be able to partake in a wide range of leisure activities and excursions in the region.
Some of your work tasks may include:
- Cleaning of the facilities
- Caring for and feeding the animals
- Walking the dogs
- Playing with the animals
- Accompanying the dogs to doctor’s appointments
- Assisting with rescue and adoption missions
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
During your time as a volunteer, you will live in the same house as the family that founded the rescue project.
This will allow you to become fully integrated into their daily lives and have the most authentic experience possible. You will sleep in a double room (which you might have to share) with a private bathroom.
The house has running water, electricity, and internet connection. You will also have access to the pool and big garden. Your volunteer program includes full board with three meals per day.
Note: In Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer projects take place, the cellular or internet connection is not always reliable and fast.
Caacupé is located in southwest Paraguay, about 1 hour from the state capital Asunción. The city is located in the region called Cordillera de los Altos, which is one of the most beautiful areas in Paraguay. Caacupé will delight you with lovely, evergreen hilly landscapes with numerous rivers and waterfalls.
Caacupé, the capital of this region, is the most populous city there, also known as the "spiritual capital" of Paraguay, because of the basilica of the Virgin of Caacupé. More than 1.5 million believers visit her each year in December via a pilgrimage.
The climate of Caacupé is subtropical, although it is quite mild and dry due to the altitude. The average annual temperature is 22 °C, but daytime temperatures can reach extremes such as 39 °C and only 3 °C during the course of the year.
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Paraguay, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.
