Volunteer Work, Health Care, Social Work
flexible start and end dates, year-round
This volunteer work takes place at a home for people with mental disabilities. Currently, there are about 20 children, adolescents, and adults with special needs living there. The center is located in a beautiful, big house, where residents receive attention around the clock. A group of educators take care of the well-being and education of the residents.
The volunteers' role includes a wide range of activities that promote the residents’ emotional, physical, and intellectual development. The educators’ and volunteers’ work are essential for making the lives of the center’s residents easier and happier. Everybody does their best to create an environment, where residents are well cared for, something that most of them wouldn't find in their normal living conditions.
Volunteers help educators with their daily tasks. Your responsibilities may include teaching music, cooking meals, creating workshops, handcrafting, playing recreational sports, and taking care of the younger ones. You also may have the chance to teach recipes, play games, or show the kids typical and simple activities that you did when you were young.
You are more than welcome to organize special programs during your stay at the center, which will establish confidence with the people at the house and make their days more diverse.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Providing a comfortable accommodation is an essential part of our volunteer programs in South America. During this volunteer project, we will provide you with either a single room in a Uruguayan homestay or a single room in a residence. Living in a homestay is the perfect opportunity to get to know the Uruguayan way of life, habits, food, daily schedules, traditions, hospitality, and much more. It also allows you to practice your Spanish in everyday situations, which lets you improve your vocabulary, pronunciation, and the use of expressions. Half board is included. Our homestays are carefully chosen and are located in nice and safe neighbourhoods.
For those who want to live a little bit more independently while volunteering abroad, we also offer accommodation in single rooms in residences (limited availability). Meals are not provided, but the residences have a kitchen, dining room, and living room for your convenience.
Montevideo is the capital of Uruguay and the most important city in the country. In various rankings, the Uruguayan capital is on top of the list in Latin America when it comes to the best quality of life. Montevideo has a lot in common with Buenos Aires and is therefore often referred to as the "little sister" of the Argentinean capital. However, life in Montevideo is much less hectic and much more relaxed.
Montevideo is not only a beautiful city with colonial charm, but also offers a great nightlife as well as an abundance of cultural events, pretty markets and - nice people. The climate is also very inviting, similar to the Mediterranean.
