Volunteer Work, Health Care
flexible start and end dates, year-round
Volunteer work projects related to health in Peru give you the opportunity to get to know the Peruvian health system and its challenges. You will actively participate in different health institutions through hands-on work. The local staff aims to provide patients with sound treatment that will lead to full rehabilitation. However, this is not an easy undertaking due to limited financial resources and lack of proper infrastructure. In addition to the medical care in the hospitals, a lot of emphasis is placed on the social welfare and support of the patients and their families. The doctors and nurses offer comfort, always encouraging patients and having an open ear to listen to their problems and needs.
Although volunteers are not required to have any special skills or a professional background in medicine/health care, medical students or health care professionals have priority. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking in Spanish.
As a volunteer, you can work in three different areas:
- Public hospital
- Children's cancer ward
- Maternity ward
This volunteer project is dedicated to help destitute and vulnerable people who cannot afford comprehensive medical care. Therefore, donations and volunteers are urgently needed. Through volunteering in this project, you can energetically support the local staff by giving dedicating your time and attention to the patients.
During this volunteer work program, you will help doctors and nurses in one of the three mentioned medical facilities. Depending on your previous knowledge, you will have the opportunity to apply your medical skills. If you don't have any previous knowledge in health care, you will be able to closely observe the nurses' and doctors' duties, assisting when needed. Health care students will have additional tasks, including offering support during treatments and examinations and helping the medical staff. Recent graduates will be able to offer immense support to the doctors and nursing staff. Professionals are also more than welcome to join this project. Your duties as a volunteer may require the use of medical work clothes, which can be purchased in Cusco.
If you decide to volunteer at the Children’s cancer ward, you may be responsible for some of the following tasks:
- Assisting with chemotherapy
- Teaching children that cannot attend school (elementary school level)
- Feeding the children
- Playing with children and distracting them
- Organizing activities and games for children
If you decide to volunteer at the Maternity ward, you may be responsible for the following tasks:
- Registering women and recording the measures carried out for each of them
- Teaching women about health, hygiene, and a healthy lifestyle
- Organizing activities that teach women everyday skills
- If you have graduated with a degree in health, you may be present during deliveries
- Other related tasks
In order for this volunteer project to be the most mutually beneficial experience possible for both you and those you help; Spanish skills are very important.
For volunteering, you need medical workwear that you can buy in Cusco or bring from home.
This volunteer program can be combined with a Spanish course in Cusco in the morning.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
It is very important for the success of your volunteer work that you feel comfortable during your stay in Peru. We therefore offer you two different accommodation options to choose from. All our accommodations are carefully selected.
Accommodation in a single room in a Peruvian homestay with half board allows you to get to know the local cuisine and immerse yourself in everyday life. In addition, living together with the hosts gives you the opportunity to get to know the warmth of the Peruvian people, their habits and their culture. You can also share your experiences with them and continuously improve your language skills.
For volunteers who prefer to live with other volunteers or Spanish students from all over the world, we offer single rooms in a residence. The bathrooms are always shared. No meals are included, but there is a kitchen for self-catering. Internet is available.
The city is known worldwide as a starting point for adventurous hikes on the Inca Trail and for the trip to the famous Inca city and World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu.
As the former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is itself a World Heritage Site and in the 13th century it had already reached a size much larger than all other Inca settlements. The history of the city is very eventful and legendary - traces of it can be found everywhere in the streets and alleys: today's very pretty cityscape is shaped by the colonial architecture, but there also are impressive remains from the Inca period, such as the legendary seamless walls that can be found everywhere. You can get a deep insight into the city's history in several museums.
Today Cusco is a lot in one: tourist magnet, starting point for adventures to Machu Picchu and surroundings, as well as a beautiful modern city in a spectacular scenery - you will be amazed!
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your volunteer work in Peru, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality.
