Program details
This farm stay placement is located on a very special farm in the central region of Chile. Antonia from Germany and Danilo from Chile operate agriculture for their own use. This way of life gives a bit of an idea of what it was like in earlier centuries - but don't worry, here you will experience “Back to the Roots Light”: with a fridge and internet.
During the Chilean summer months, Antonia and Danilo also offer horse riding tours for tourists from time to time. Danilo's carpenter's workshop is also part of the farm.
Besides Antonia and Danilo, Danilo's children live three days a week on the farm, so volunteers should not only be fond of animals and nature, but also love children. The other residents on the farm are a dog, chickens, horses, a mule, a cow and a pig. You will also often meet friends and family members, because they often come by to help. The carpentry workshop is supported by two permanent employees. In addition to work, nature and lots of fresh air, there is also cultural immersion and lots of opportunities to test your Spanish in everyday situations.
Tasks
The tasks involved in this farm stay program are varied. It is important that you lend a hand where help is needed so that everything from the garden or the field comes to the table and the animals are cared for. On the days when the children are on the farm, you may be ask to watch the children for a while. So, you should not only have a heart for animals and country life, but also for children.
You work about 30 hours a week, the working day begins with a delicious country breakfast with the family. You have 2 days a week off, either on the weekend or during the week, depending on the workload.
Riding skills are not required for this farm stay. Antonia and Danilo are happy to teach participants without riding experience how to ride and how to work with horses.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Feeding animals
- Gardening
- Helping in the household
- Helping with the production of food
- Working with the animals
- Repair and maintenance work
- Childcare
- Helping out in the carpenter's workshop (maybe)
During high sesaon may include from time to time:
- Preparing the horses for the horseback rides and take care of them afterwards
- Horseback rides with guests (only with appropriate riding skills)
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.
Accommodation
This farm stay offers living with a host family and full board. You live in Antonia and Danilo's house and have meals with them. If you like, feel free to put your cooking skills to the test from time to time. Antonia and Danilo are not vegetarians, but have already had vegetarian volunteers with them and are happy to adapt.
There is a volunteer room that you either live alone or with another volunteer. The house has two bathrooms, one for the owner and one for volunteers or visits.
There is wifi and good internet reception via mobile phone.
Location
This lovely family farm is located in the picturesque region of Maule, about 300 km south of Santiago de Chile, on the edge of the Andes. The heart of Chilean country life beats here and some villages seem like from another century. The nearest village, Rari, is 4 km from the farm. There you will find the basics for daily needs. Rari is known for its horsehair handicraft figures, which are unique in the world and, according to oral tradition, can look back on 200 years of history. These handicrafts techniques have remained almost intact over time.
The small town of Colbun is 7 km away and Linares, the next larger town, 25 km. Antonia is happy to take you with her when she runs errands in town.
There are several tourist highlights right next door: two reservoirs have become tourist magnets for the Chileans, including beach life, holiday homes, etc.
The Termas de Panimavida offer relaxation and wellness while the two greatest treasures are a few kilometers further north: In the Reserva Nacional Altos de Lircay and the Parque Nacional Siete Tazas you will find breathtaking nature, volcanoes, basalt landscapes, crystal clear lakes, lots of waterfalls and rivers that are so incredibly turquoise that you have to see them. These two parks are a paradise for hikers and camping enthusiasts and anyone who likes to cool off in the water after a strenuous hike in front of a spectacular natural backdrop.
