Farm Stay, Farm Work
Placements throughout the country
flexible start and end dates, year-round
You love horses, you like to be out in the fresh air, and you can work hard? Imagine exploring the Patagonian pampas on horseback - wind in your hair, the smell of freedom in your nose and a spectacular mountain panorama at the horizon.
You can do real “cowboy work” or might as well look after the horses on an idyllic vineyard with pleasant sunshine, while on the northern hemisphere, winter is coming.
Sounds tempting? Then come to Chile and work on a horse farm. It does not matter how old you are, as long as you are of legal age and have riding experience, farm work with horses is a wonderful option for you. In a very authentic way, you will get to know the locals, improve your Spanish skills and have an unforgettable time.
This Farm Stay program is all about horses. You should be physically fit to help with the stable work, as well as being able to work in a team and have a high sense of responsibility.
There are horse farms in different regions of Chile, from the central region with Mediterranean climate and the idyllic green lake region down to Patagonia. Please be aware, that some of our program sites are remote, so you can expect no leisure activities as in the city. Instead, you will have an unforgettable time in the countryside and you will experience how well it can be, to live in harmony with animals and nature.
When submitting your application, you are welcome to share your expectations and wishes regarding your placement. We will then focus on it as best we can. Your individual program description will be sent to you after we have completed the placement process. So, before you book your farm stay you will have exact information on location, tasks, working hours, accommodation, etc.
This program is all about the horses and their well-being. However, not all of our partner farms with horses do the same kind of work. Some train and accommodate tournament horses, others have horses for work with sheep or cattle or transporting goods to remote areas. Others of our partners are dedicated to tourism and offer horse riding holidays or day trips on horseback.
Working Hours are between 30 and 40 hours per week (depending on program place)
The program description with information regarding the farm profile and your tasks will be send to you after the placement process has been completed.
Depending on where you are placed, you can help with the following tasks:
- Moving and training horses
- Riding horses
- Feeding and caring for horses
- Bringing horses to the pasture/stable
- Preparing horses for tournaments
- Preparing horses for horseback riding excursiones
- Stable work
- Maintenance work
- Helping in the garden/field work
Accommodation in a single or shared room is included and is provided by the farm and can either be in the farm owner's house or in a house on the same site where the employees live. However, in any case you get a lot of contact with the locals and can experience Chilean country life and the habits of the people there firsthand.
Farm Stay programs include full board (typical food / dishes). Meals are provided either as meals served, food for self-cooking or money for your own shopping.
Our farm stay places are located in the central region, in the southern Chilean lake region, and in Patagonia. All three areas are perfect for being explored from horseback, which is why there are so many farms with horses, including farms operated for tourism offering horse riding tours.
There are many incredibly beautiful places in Chile, to which there is simply no road. If you want to see and experience them, you have to walk - or ride - from a certain point. The "Arrieros", Chilean Cowboys, have made routes through the mountains and pampas since ancient times, many of them are popular hiking and horse riding trails today.
During a farm stay in Chile's central region there will usually be bright skies, sunshine and correspondingly high temperatures. Thanks to irrigation, the valleys are fertile, while the surrounding mountains are rugged and dry. Here you will find beautiful wineries and a lot of fruit producing farms.
The southern Chilean lake region attracts with green meadows and picturesque landscapes. There are also paths through hidden valleys and pristine forests were known by the “arrieros” only for a long time. Climbing tours are possible here, as well as water sports and horse riding or hikes through fairytale forests, including beautiful waterfalls. It rains often in the south thus nature is very abundant and the temperatures are usually pleasant.
Patagonia invites to wild rides, amazing landscapes and untouched nature. Here you can feel like a cowboy after work (or even at work) and be enchanted by the vastness and wildness of this stunning landscape.
Spanish at communication level. For optimal preparation for your Working Holiday in Chile, we advise you to take a Spanish course before the program starts. This gives you the opportunity to slowly get used to the language, culture and mentality and to meet like-minded people in a relaxes atmosphere.
