Task
The best way to get to know a country is to immerse in its society, the language and culture! Our volunteer work programs in Peru are specially designed for travellers who want to experience this multifaceted country first-hand. You will work with local people in different social projects and you will be living in a Peruvian host family in order to experience the typical and authentic family life in your host country. You will also have plenty of opportunities to discover the amazing surroundings and the world famous Inca heritage site of Machu Picchu!During your volunteer in Peru work you will support the "Cusco Kids" project that was established some years ago in order to help children in need in Cusco and the surrounding villages. Volunteers will be placed in different programs that aid babies and children between 3 and 18 years who come from difficult social backgrounds. Those infants and children have been living on the street, have been (sexually) abused, have been victim of violence or have been brought to shelters because their parents do not or cannot give them the care they need.
Volunteers may work in orphanages, day-care centers, rescue homes for abused girls, children's homes, kindergartens, elementary schools. As a volunteer, you will primarily support the local staff in the daily care of children and routine duties. Your tasks are diverse and may be:
- Daily household tasks
- Recreational activities such as excursions, sports
- Monitor homework
- Teach English
- Other pedagogic activities
- Do handicrafts with the children
- Educational or recreational field trips
- Play games, dance, paint
You should also be patient when dealing with the children and involve your own ideas and creativity.
Accommodation
A comfortable accommodation in a carefully selected host family is one important aspect of our volunteer work programs in Peru. The experience of living with a local family, will give you the chance to not only improve your Spanish language skills but also to get authentic insights into the Peruvian culture and family life. Share your experience with your "Peruvian family" and discover the cultural immersion into another environment.Peru is also known for its delicious cuisine! Your family will cater you with three meals per day and for sure you will learn a lot about the Peruvian delicacies and their habits. If you need some privacy you can relax in your single room provided by the family. The bathroom is shared with other family members. Upon special request we might place you at a homestay where a private bathroom is provided.
All our host families live as close as possible to the volunteer projects and are easily accessible by public transport. This also allows you also to get in contact with other volunteers, if you want to do so.

Details
The volunteer work programs take place in Cusco (the starting point for excursions to the world famous Machu Picchu) and the surrounding villages. Some of the social institutions that host our volunteers are public organizations and are financed by the Peruvian government. Others however are private foundations and depend on donations and the help of national and international volunteers. The volunteer work projects mainly help children and teenagers from socially disadvantaged and poor families. Currently the different institutions care for several hundred kids in the age of 1 to 18 years. Some of the kids are orphans, others have been rescued from street life, some have been abused or mistreated and many just need a safe place to stay because they do not get the necessary care at their parents' homes.
Through the projects the children receive a shelter, a balanced nutrition, clothing and medical care.
The organizations also ensure that children receive education and physiologic attention in case they have lived traumatic experiences (abuse, violence, etc.).
The institutions are a safe place for them to stay and the opportunity of education and new perspectives for a future better life.

Country
Country information Peru |
Peru sits in the vicinity of many countries. To the north is Ecuador and Colombia, Brazil to the east, Bolivia to the southeast, Chile to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The Andes mountain range runs parallel to the Pacific Ocean, dividing the country into three geographic regions of coastline, Andes highlands and Amazonian jungle. About 60% of the countries territory is rainforest area, which qualifies Peru as the fourth country of great tropical forest expansion after Brazil, Congo and Indonesia.
Peru contains over 20,000 years of cultural reflection. Throughout the country exists historical evidence and traditional ways of life that are still alive today. Visitors often report their amazement of the abundant remains of former cultures, mystic tribes and Inca Empire deposits. A place like Chavín, a former pilgrim center, is where the culture of the Paracas and Pucarás and the gigantic Nazca lines are still all part of the rich culture. Last but not least, Peru is home to both the World Heritage city of Cusco, as well as the world famous Machu Picchu (one of the Seven Wonders of the World). Peru invites travelers to enjoy the country outside of the world of history as well with wonderful beaches, impervious jungles, fascinating Peruvian culture, and traditional Peruvian food and drink. The three climatic zones of Peru entail three ideal times to visit this country. The average daily temperature of the Andes region is around 50°F with freezing nightly temperatures. Early June through August is the dry season of the mountainous region. Still, during the rainiest months of December through March the rainfall is minimal. The hot months of the highlands are December through March with extreme dry air; this coastal strip sees little rain year round. In the tropical regions, April through November entails humid weather and many picture perfect foggy mornings. The all-around peak season of travel to Peru is between June and August with drier weather and warm beach days! Lastly, the elevation of Peru makes all of these norms unpredictable as you explore higher into the Andes. The Peruvians in general, are rather reserved and timid, but once you take steps to ¨break the ice,¨ you will discover that they are very warm and friendly people.
