Location
Cartagena de Indias is a beautiful city on the Caribbean Coast in the North of Colombia. It is the capital of the Province of Bolívar with 1.2 million inhabitants. Cartagena is located in the tropical zone, therefore it is a damp and hot area, the yearly average temperature is 27ºC.Without any doubt, Cartagena has a lot to offer: beautiful white sandy beaches, turquoise blue and warm sea, dreamlike coral islands, and many well-preserved historical and architectural treasures – no surprise that it is the most visited city in Colombia! In 1984, the completely walled-in old city center was declared World Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. Its most important sources of income are: fishing, tourism, cargo and oil industry.
The ramparts and walls were built around the city in order to protect it from pirate attacks. The forts of San José and San Sebastián and the castles of San Felipe de Barajas and San Fernando y Las Bóvedas are still standing today. Now, nearly 500 years old, this majestic city on the South-western Caribbean, retains much of the charm, history, architecture, romance and adventure of days gone by.
The Carribean nightlife is legendary and you will see why! Among a lot of tourist party attractions like the „rumba en chiva", a party bus, you will find a great variety of music and dance bars as well as a lot of delicious restaurants.
Whatever parts of the city you will discover you won't be able to resist its Afro-Carribean charm reflected in the cheerful music and open nature of its inhabitants.
