Ecuador

1. What are the current visa regulations for Ecuador?
Citizens of most European countries, the United States, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand (excluding Cook Islands and Niue) and Australia do not need a visa to visit Ecuador. On your arrival in the country you receive a so-called tarjeta de turismo which allows you to stay for up to 90 days in Ecuador. This tourist card can be extended for another 90 days at the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores once you are in the country.

2. How long does my passport have to be valid when entering Ecuador?
When entering Ecuador your passport needs to be valid for at least six more months.

3. What about the airport tax when leaving Ecuador?
On your departure from Ecuador it is very important to bear in mind that you have to pay an airport tax, which can only be paid in cash. Currently, the airport tax is US$ 25 for international flights. There is no airport tax for domestic flights.

4. Which currency is used in Ecuador? What is the current exchange rate?
The currency of Ecuador is the US-Dollar (USD). The banknotes come in denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1.000, 5.000 and 10.000 US-Dollars. There are coins of 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 Cents and 1 US-Dollar. Please note that bills with a value of more than 50 USD are hardly accepted anywhere.

5. Where can I exchange money in Ecuador? Is it possible to withdraw money or pay by credit card?
In all big cities in Ecuador there are exchange offices and banks where you can easily exchange money. You can withdraw US-Dollars from any ATM using your bank or credit card. Of course, you can pay by credit card in most of the big shops and restaurants. Traveler checks will be accepted as well and can be exchanged in many bank offices in mayor cities like Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca and even in a few tourist resorts.

7. When is the best time for visiting Ecuador?
Even though Ecuador is a rather small country, the climate differs a lot depending on the altitude (0 to 6.000m above sea level). Big temperature differences between day and night are typical, but the temperature profile during the year is very similar. Therefore, the seasons in Ecuador are actually defined by the rainy and dry seasons.

Ecuador’s coast is characterized by tropical climate with warm temperatures during the whole year and a rainy season from January until April. During the other months it hardly rains. In Quito you have to be aware of rainfalls at midday between September and April. However and in spite of the altitude, the maximum temperatures reach 20ºC. In the Amazon region the temperatures are tropically warm and there are rainfalls all year round.
