*We would like to point out that in Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer work projects take place, Internet and/or cellular radio systems do not always work reliably.

This volunteer project is supervised by a German-founded Costa Rican Eco-Lodge that owns a vast area of around 850 hectares (2,100 acres) of land. In this area, they operate an ecotourism and conservation program. The lodge is located 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Limón, which is not far from Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The terrain of the lodge is adjacent to the famous National Park La Amistad, which is known for its stunning biodiversity. The eco-lodge welcomes guests from all over the world and offers accommodation in cozy lodges and excursions in the rainforest (on horseback or on foot).

The main objective of this project is the preservation of the rainforest. Since the founders of the lodge devote themselves to the ongoing protection of the nature and animals, the terrain of the lodge could be considered a private natural reserve. Thanks to the water conservation project that the lodge operates, approximately 70,000 people around Limón receive clean drinking water. As a volunteer, you will learn about the primary rainforest, which is the basis of your work. The rainforest is the natural habitat of thousands of exotic animals and plants.

About Costa RicaVolunteer Work Abroad in Costa Rica
You want to volunteer in Costa Rica? A great choice! Read more about Costa Rica and its people, and learn why it is a perfect place for volunteering abroad in Latin America.

While volunteering at the eco-lodge, you will help with various tasks. You will support the "guardabosques" (park ranger), the forest guards, in their work. This includes clearing the forest paths of growths and garbage, along with the creation of new forest trails. It is also important that all paths are well signposted and maintained. The park ranger also regularly patrol the forest to observe the plants and animals. On these patrols, they collect important data on a wide variety of different plants and animals, often observing some of the most exotic mammals and birds in nature. A large part of the area is primary forest, but some places still need to be reforested. The help of volunteers is greatly needed here. Volunteers will also work in the tourism area of the eco-lodge.

Here, you can help care for the guests and accompany the employees, either as an assistant of a guide or as a translator, for a variety of activities and excursions in the rainforest. The lodge also has its own horses that are fed and cared for by volunteers, so work in the horse barn is also one of the many tasks you will engage in during your time as a volunteer at the lodge.

Volunteers will live in the staff house at the Eco-Lodge. These are small, basic houses (cabañas) that can accommodate 2-4 people. Each cabaña has a bathroom. Meals are provided at the lodge.
