Volunteer work projects related to health in Peru give you the opportunity to get to know the Peruvian health system and its challenges. You will actively participate in different health institutions through hands-on work. The local staff aims to provide patients with sound treatment that will lead to full rehabilitation, however, this is not an easy undertaking due to limited financial resources and lack of proper infrastructure. In addition to the medical care in the hospitals, a lot of emphasis is placed on the social welfare and support of the patients and their families. The doctors and nurses offer comfort, always encouraging patients and having an open ear to listen to their problems and needs. The hospitals that receive our volunteers are flexible with work schedules and allow participants to work either full-time or part-time. Although volunteers are not required to have any special skills or a professional background in medicine / health care, medical students or health care professionals have priority. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking in Spanish.

As a volunteer, you can work in three different areas:

  1. Public hospital in Cusco
  2. Children's cancer ward
  3. Maternity center for pregnant women

This volunteer project is dedicated to help the destitute and vulnerable citizens of Peru that cannot afford comprehensive medical care. Therefore, donations and volunteers are urgently needed. Through this project, you can energetically support the locals by giving them your time and attention.

During your volunteer work program, you will help doctors and nurses in one of the medical facilities where we place our volunteers. Depending on your previous knowledge, you will have the opportunity to apply and improve your medical skills. If you don't have any previous knowledge in health care, you will be able to closely observe the nurses' and doctors' duties, assisting when needed. Health care students will have additional tasks, including offering support during treatments and examinations and helping the medical staff. Recent graduates will be able to offer immense support to the doctors and nursing staff. Professionals are also more than welcome to join this project. Your duties as a volunteer may require the use of medical work clothes, which can be purchased in Cusco.

If you decide to volunteer at the Childhood Cancer Center, you may be responsible for some of the following tasks:
    - Assisting with chemotherapy
    - Teaching children that cannot attend school (elementary school level)
    - Feeding the children
    - Playing with children and distracting them
    - Organizing activities and games for children
    - Supervising and monitoring children

If you decide to volunteer at the Maternity Center, you may be responsible for the following tasks:
    - Registering women and recording actions of patients
    - Teaching women about health, hygiene, and a healthy lifestyle
    - Organizing activities that teach women everyday skills
    - If you have graduated with a degree in health, you may be present during deliveries
    - Other related tasks

In order for this volunteer project to be the most mutually beneficial experience possible for both you and those you help; Spanish skills are very important.

One of the most important aspects of our volunteer work programs in Peru is ensuring that we place our volunteers with a carefully selected host family. The experience of living with a local family will give you the chance to not only improve your Spanish language skills, but also gain authentic insights into Peruvian culture and family life. Join a Peruvian family and experience their hospitality!

Peru is also known for its delicious cuisine. Your family will provide you with half-board, which will allow you to learn a lot about authentic Peruvian delicacies. If you need some privacy, you can relax in your own single room provided by the family. The bathroom is shared with other family members.

Alternatively, if you wish to share your stay abroad in Peru with other volunteers and Spanish students, we can place you in a student residence. This accommodation offers a single bedroom with a shared bathroom, and no meals are provided. There is a common kitchen area where meals can be prepared.
