*We would like to point out that in Latin America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer work projects take place, Internet and/or cellular radio systems do not always work reliably.

Thanks to many years of experience, we know that volunteering abroad broadens your personal horizon and gives you a lot of life experience. Our volunteer programs in Peru offer you the opportunity to show your social commitment abroad and experience rich Peruvian culture.

Several rural schools are located within the beautiful area of Huancayo. As a volunteer with this project, you will have the opportunity to teach at a state primary school among the fascinating scenery of the Peruvian Andes highlands. The schools here often lack teachers and opportunities to offer ideal learning and leisure activities to the children that supplement a traditional school schedule.

Any support offered by volunteer workers is always welcome! The girls and boys, who are between the ages of 6-12, are always happy to learn from and alongside foreign volunteers. Through the work of the volunteers in the schools, children are offered enhanced and alternative educational opportunities. Computer courses, English, or art are only a few examples of the subjects that the volunteers can teach. Through the expansion of the school lessons involving this varied range of subjects, the standard of education for the children that live in the countryside can be radically improved and set them up for a bright future.

For this project, you will work as an assistant teacher in a rural school near Huancayo. The kids that you will be working with are between the ages of 6-12. Your main task is to teach the children one or two subjects, according to your abilities, interests, and educational background. Work hours are from Monday to Friday, at least 4 hours per day. The schools are closed on the weekends. The volunteers mostly give English lessons (basic things, such as colors, numbers, names of fruits, animals, etc.), art lessons, sport coaching, or computer courses. You also have the opportunity to teach other subjects based on your abilities and interests, such as mathematics and geography. As a volunteer, you are also responsible for the preparation of your lessons. New ideas and suggestions for the teaching structure are always welcome. Please be aware that the school material is scarce, and the institution often lacks even the most basic material for carrying out lessons (e.g. pens, blocks, calculators, books etc.). Please approach your tasks with a lot of creativity and initiative. If your travel budget and luggage space permits, you can accomplish your teaching goals by bringing those kinds of materials from your home country, the capital of Lima, or Huancayo.

Please be aware of the high level of responsibility that this project requires and make sure to always be a positive role model for the children. Since the children come from rural areas, they are often quite introverted and reserved. Therefore, it is important that you approach them with openness and understanding. Team spirit, a positive attitude, and consistent patience are the most important skills for this project.

It is important for us that you feel comfortable during your volunteer work project in Peru, and that you can experience the culture of the Andean civilization. For this to be achieved, it is essential that you have a nice, safe living environment. You can choose between two different accommodations options: a single room with a host family or a shared room at a volunteer house. The host family will provide you with 3 meals per day, which is usually authentic Peruvian food. No meals are provided in the volunteer house; however, volunteers have access to a kitchen where they can store and prepare food. All our accommodations offer potable water, hot water, and electricity. Internet is only available at homes.
