This volunteer work project takes place in the northern part of Patagonia and includes different types of tasks. Communities that live in the region of Cochamó founded the project with the aim of developing sustainable tourism in Puelo River area. Among virtually untouched nature, this initiative is made up of experts in ecotourism and environmental education. Their goal is to foster cooperation between different providers of touristic activities on a sustainable basis. They created a small tourism center where tourists can get information about activities and sightseeing in this region.

The volunteer project is located in the region around the Puelo River and offers many opportunities for horseback riding, different kind of water sports, hiking, trekking, wildlife observation, and other fun activities. Furthermore, they produce and sell traditional local crafts. The tourist center works hard to unfold and display the ecological and cultural wealth of the region. Sustainable and ecological agriculture play a big role in that, and there is a big cooperation between natives in this regard. The support of international volunteers is very much appreciated since this brings new knowledge and ideas into the tourism project.

As a volunteer, you will be assigned different tasks and responsibilities. It is important to mention that a high level of flexibility and adaptability is needed with this project. Sowing and harvesting of agricultural products are especially important throughout the different seasons of the year, with an emphasis on the fruit harvest. In autumn, forage for the animals has to be stored so that they have enough food for the long and hard winter ahead. The input and know-how of volunteers is very much needed to further this sustainable tourism project, as the region is hardly developed. There is so much to do, and volunteers have the unique opportunity to work hands-on while making a difference.

Your responsibilities may include:

Processing firewood (chopping, stacking, collecting shavings)
  Storing forage for the winter
  Maintaining and constructing fences
  Expanding and maintaining hiking trails
  Assisting with craftwork
  Organizing local events
Assisting the farmers in the area

Volunteers that are a part of this project in Patagonia will be accommodated in a single room with a local host family. If availability is limited, volunteers will live in shared rooms in a guesthouse or even in a tent. The families of the community will care for your food. Meals are usually typical Chilean, with a strong influence of the Patagonian region. Although the volunteer coordinators will make their best efforts to consider personal interests and needs when assigning the accommodation, personal preferences cannot always be fulfilled.
