Travel Health Insurance

Travel Health Insurance for Peru mandatory!

This volunteer program in Peru takes place in the beautiful colonial city of Cusco, which is the starting point for excursions to the world-famous Machu Picchu. This project consists of placing volunteers in different orphanages for girls or boys. The children’s homes offer a refuge for children and teenagers that come from socially disadvantaged and poor families. Many of the kids are orphans or have been rescued from the streets. Some of the children have been abused or mistreated, and many just need a safe place to stay because they do not receive the necessary care in their parents' homes. Most of the kids have had traumatic experiences that have harmed them both psychologically and physically.

In the orphanages, the children receive shelter, balanced meals, clothing, and medical care. The organizations also ensure that children receive education and physiologic attention if they have had traumatic experiences (abuse, violence, etc.). The homes are a safe place for them to stay and provide them with the opportunity to get a new education and gain new perspectives that set them up for a bright future.

Although volunteers are not required to have special skills or a professional background in social work or psychology, they do need to be able to work independently, have a positive attitude, maintain sensitivity when dealing children and youth, and demonstrate patience. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking Spanish at an intermediate level.

The best way to get to know a country is by full immersion into the language and culture! Our volunteer work programs in Peru are designed specifically for travelers who want to experience this multifaceted country first-hand. As a volunteer, you will work with local people through a social project and live with a Peruvian host family.

This will allow you to directly experience the \ authentic family life and culture in your host country. You will have plenty of opportunities to explore the amazing surroundings, including the world-famous Inca heritage site, Machu Picchu. Volunteers should be independent, energetic, patient, and flexible while carrying out volunteer work at the children’s homes.Due to the diverse and difficult backgrounds of the children, tolerance and understanding is necessary to successfully build their trust and carry out daily activities with them.

Volunteer work tasks may include:

Organizing recreational activities, such as excursions, sports, arts & crafts, etc.
  Providing homework help
  Playing games, dancing, and painting
Helping out with light chores necessary for the day-to-day operation of the orphanages
Building the children’s self-esteem and confidence
Helping with the preparation of the meals
Keeping the orphanage tidy and clean
  Organizing cultural events

Volunteers are also encouraged to be creative and to bring any of their own personal skills while working with the children and teens. New ideas are always welcome and can be discussed with your in-country volunteer coordinator. Experienced social workers or psychologists are very much appreciated when carrying out observations and helping to improve the quality and structure of the organization.

A comfortable accommodation with a carefully selected host family is an important component of your stay abroad in Peru. The experience of living with a local family will give you the opportunity to not only improve your Spanish language skills, but also gain authentic insights into Peruvian culture and society. Share your experience with your "Peruvian family" and discover full cultural immersion. In addition to its beautiful scenery, Peru is also known for its delicious cuisine! Your family will cater you with two meals per day (half-board), and you will learn a lot about Peruvian delicacies and authentic dishes.

If you need some privacy, you can relax in your single room, which is provided by the family. The bathroom is shared with other family members. Alternatively, if volunteers wish to share with other volunteers or Spanish students, we have single rooms available in a student residence. This accommodation offers a single bedroom with a shared bathroom. No meals are included, however, there is a common kitchen area where meals can be prepared.
