*We would like to point out that in South America, especially in remote areas where many of our volunteer work projects take place, Internet and/or cellular radio systems do not always work reliably.

The Galapagos Islands are among the world’s most famous travel destinations. Many people dream of spending just a couple of days on this amazing archipelago! This project allows you to spend a few weeks on Galapagos Islands while volunteering in our volunteer childcare program. This volunteer project supports public day care centers on Isabela Island. The centers were set up to care for children whose parents work full-time or are unable to care for their children during the day. To avoid leaving the children unattended at home, the day care centers that parents send their children to offer a safe and caring environment. The children at the centers range from 1 to 3 years old.

The main objective of this project is to offer the children a comprehensive and supportive daycare, assuring that their educational, nutritional, and psychological needs are met. Despite the lack of resources, including educational materials, the institution has managed to create a friendly and nurturing environment for the children to enjoy and carry out productive activities throughout the day. If you love working with and caring for children, then this project is perfect for you! This is your chance to make a real difference in the lives of Ecuadorian children in an isolated place like the Galapagos Islands.

Volunteers at a day care center in the Galapagos Islands will assist with a wide range of activities since the children are divided into groups based on their age. Oftentimes, there is only one person in charge of a large group of children and the supervisor-child ratio is unbalanced. This is why volunteers are desperately needed and greatly appreciated.

The main responsibilities of the volunteers are centered around assisting the local educators while playing, singing, painting, drawing, dancing, or talking with the children. Help is also needed during feeding and cleaning time. Furthermore, it is very important that volunteers act as a role model to the children by always being responsible at work and demonstrating respect and cultural tolerance. Promoting positive hygiene methods and instilling values in the children is essential. The work schedule is mainly during morning hours, from about 7:30 am to 1:00 pm. In the afternoons, the children take a “siesta”, or nap, and volunteers can prepare the activities for the next day, or just enjoy some spare time on the island.

There are between 40 and 70 children at the day care centers, however, this number is subject to change.

A top priority of our volunteer teaching programs in Ecuador is ensuring full cultural immersion. The best way to learn more about Ecuadorian culture and customs, and even to practice your Spanish skills, is to live in a homestay. With this in mind, all of our volunteers on Galapagos Islands stay with a local Ecuadorian family. The host families provide our volunteers with a welcoming home and three meals per day. Laundry service is also included once a week. All families are located within walking distance from the day care center or are only a short bus ride away. Volunteers will have a single or shared bedroom, while the bathroom may be private or shared with other family members. The accommodations provide all of the basic services, including a telephone in case of emergency, electricity, and clean water. Not all rooms have hot water, but the climate on the islands is hot and humid year-round.
