PERU
Learning Spanish in Arequipa!
|
Arequipa, the “White City”, is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in Peru. It is probable that it got its name from the white sillar rock (a whitish volcanic stone) which most of the city’s historical buildings are made of. With approximately 800.000 inhabitants Arequipa is one of Peru’s bigger cities and has a lot to offer, both in terms of culture and nature. A trip to the Cañón del Colca, which is considered to be the deepest canyon in the world, is definitely worthwhile, as is a visit to the monastery Santa Catalina which was opened to the public as recently as 1970.
The center of Arequipa was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.

SPANISH LANGUAGE SCHOOL
Our partner school in Arequipa was founded in 1996 and has a lot of experience in teaching the Spanish language to foreigners. It is perfectly located; you only have to walk about 25 minutes to reach the city center. You will be taught Spanish in small groups with a maximum of four students. In addition to learning the language you will also have the chance to learn about Peruvian culture and literature, and specialize in either Spanish grammar or conversation. One of the school’s main priorities is making you feel welcome in Arequipa and because of its frequently reviewed and updated teaching methods, you will go back home with the knowledge of Spanish you wanted to achieve during your stay!

SPANISH LANGUAGE COURSES
Before starting classes you will have a short conversation
with one of the teachers to find out what kind of
Spanish knowledge you already have and which topics
you would like to deal with during your classes.
You will always be taught individually. The language
school is very flexible, you may for example take
classes for one week (at least two classes per day),
take a week off for traveling or other cultural activities and continue
with your studies the following week. You can start your classes on any
day of the week. Classes are from Monday to Friday and each class lasts
60 minutes.
Apart from the regular classes, you will also have
the opportunity to participate in special courses such as Peruvian history,
Peruvian literature, commercial correspondence and Quechua. Quechua is
the original language of the Inca and is still spoken in various countries
of South America. If you only want to take special courses, you have to
take at least two classes per day, but you are able to choose the number
of days you want to take classes per week. You may also combine the special
courses with the regular classes when taking at least ten regular classes
per week. In this case you can choose the number of special courses you
want to take each day. Come and improve your Spanish language skills or
become part of the Inca by learning their language!

ADDITIONAL WORKSHOPS
To enrich your stay in this beautiful South American
country, the language school in Arequipa has a lot of extra activities
on offer such as typical Peruvian cooking lessons. In a short period of
time you will know how to prepare ceviche, the national dish of Peru, or typical Peruvian rice. As with all Latin American nationalities Peruvians have a very lively culture and mentality and you are warmly invited to become part of it by joining the salsa and music lessons. Learn more about cumbia, salsa, samba and the typical Peruvian instruments.

ACCOMMODATION
Whilst learning Spanish is a key part of getting to know Peru, it is also essential to learn something of the country’s
traditions, and the lifestyles and mentality of its people. During your
stay in Arequipa you will be living with one of the carefully chosen host
families, who will include you in their daily life. The families usually
live very close to the language school and you will be staying in a single
room. If you arrive with a friend, you are more than welcome to stay together
in a double room.

OTHER SERVICES
The language school works together with a local taxi
company in Lima so you have the option of being picked
up when you arrive at the airport in Lima. If you choose to stay overnight
and continue your trip to Arequipa the next day, the taxi company will
take you to your chosen hotel. Of course, you may take the bus to Arequipa
right away in which case they will drop you off at the bus station. We
do not suggest taking the cheapest bus, because this might take you about
20 hours to get to Arequipa and the normal travel distance by bus is only
about 14 hours.
The school also offers a special pick-up service from the airport and the bus station in Arequipa which will drop you off at your accommodation. If you book at least one week of Spanish classes and stay with a host family, the pick-up is free of charge. Otherwise, you will have to pay € 6
or S/. 23 to get picked up from the airport or € 3 or S/. 11,50 to
get picked up from the bus station in Arequipa.
